As the green industry has been stimulated recently, landscape tree production has garnered more and more interest, and introduction of latest production technology is required in accordance with economic development. Thus, it is desirable to widely introduce and use container cultivation technology to produce and supply landscape trees of newly-required types, sizes and forms in large quantity. In advanced countries, container cultivation technology has already been adopted and used actively with continuous research to develop cultivation methods. Thus, this study is aimed at providing measures to improve the landscape tree container production system for advancement of Korea's landscape industry by researching and analyzing its landscape tree production technology in comparison with advanced landscape countries, including the U.S, Canada, and Japan in a systematic manner. In the U.S, a 4-step production system using ‘Whitcomb System’ is in place, and mature trees are produced in containers of up to 225L. In Byland Nurseries Ltd. of Canada, landscape trees are produced using containers at facilities and outdoors, and mature trees are produced using rectangular containers of up to 45 gallons (170L). It is also the first farm that uses the recycled water of Province of British Columbia. In Japan, landscape trees of around 1.5m are produced and distributed using containers, which has higher price competitiveness compared to field cultivation. In Korea, a tree nursery of 20ha was built for the purpose of supplying landscape trees needed for creating forests and parks to transform the Metropolitan area landfills into ecological parks and purify the environment. The tree nursery is focused on field cultivation and container seedlings are mostly produced in 18 greenhouse units including glass greenhouse. Company Suppro Inc. is focusing on landscape tree production using fields and containers after building a corporate tree nursery of 19ha in Gangjin, South Jeolla region. The company is also conducting research into field-container linked cultivation technology by creating greenhouse and irrigation facilities for container cultivation. As for issues with domestic landscape tree container production system, the system is not perfectly systemized. In addition, since containers that can produce mid-sized and large landscape trees have not been developed, there is no tall tree container production system. Furthermore, distribution system for future commercialization of container cultivation method is not properly established, and landscape contractors are not fully aware of container cultivation method. The following measures are suggested to solve the issues. First, seedlings with excellent root development should be produced from the early stage of container production. Roots have to develop significantly for transplant into containers of higher volume to produce mid-sized and large trees. It is essential to develop containers that can produce trees with excellent root development by creating a robust root system from seedlings to mid-sized and large trees. Second, research and development on mid-sized and large containers appropriate for Korea should be conducted. Third, preparations have to be made for future container landscape tree market by establishing a distribution system. Finally, to boost the awareness of container cultivation method, continuous research and development should be conducted to allow producers and customers to encounter it easily through specialized landscaping specifications or landscaping magazines. This study has presented measures to improve the landscape tree container production system. However, it doesn't provide sufficient data to support the price adjustment of trees with field cultivation and container cultivation, which is needed for future popularization of landscape tree container production system. Thus, studies on tree species-specific container production should be conducted to produce more variety of landscape trees.
