The difference of body composition, cardiovascular function, and isokinetic muscle strength were compared and analyzed from players of the three kinds of combat sports, judo, boxing, and wrestling. I tend to provide the reference data of individual and professional training program based on this study. The subjects were male combat sports players in training at a high school and 30 players were selected from each sport, respectively. For investigation of body composition, height, weight, amount and percentage of body fat, and basal metabolic rate were measured. Moreover, blood pressure and lung capacity were tested to examine circulatory and cardiovascular functions. The physical strength of players was determined based on the muscular strength (power of the grip and the muscles along the spine), flexibility (Sit and reach), muscular endurance (sit-ups and push-ups), power (Sargent jump), agility (side step and whole body reaction), and balance (One leg balance eye closed). For the examination of the isokinetic muscle strength, the maximum torques (at 60°/s and 180°/s) and the total work done of relative torque (at 240°/s) of knee extensor and flexor strength were determined using isokinetic dynamometer. The measured data was evaluated by one-way analysis of variance with post-hoc test by Scheffe (p<0.05). The results of this study are as follows; 1. Of the body composition, the differences were not significant in height, weight, and body mass index among the three sports while amount and percentage of body fat were significant statistically (p<0.05). Moreover, the amount and percentage of body fat of wrestling players were highest and those of boxing players were lowest. 2. The significant differences among the three sports players were not shown in the circulatory and cardiovascular functions such as the blood pressure and the lung capacity. 3. Of the fundamentals of physical strength, six indexes (grapping power of muscular strength, flexibility, sit-ups of muscular endurance, explosive power, side step of agility, and balance) were similar among the three sports respectively. However, the power of muscles along the spine was most strong in the wrestling players while the power of boxing players was weakest. The boxers were stronger than other sports players in the muscular endurance measured by push-ups and the agility by whole body reaction. These differences were significant statistically (p<0.05). 4. In case of the isokinetic muscle strength, the maximum torques of right knee flexor strength (at 60°/s) not shown difference while the three isokinetic muscle strengths, i.e., right-, left knee extensor strength, and left knee flexor strength, were different among the three sports players, statistically (p<0.05). The three strengths were strong in wrestling players and were weak in the boxing players. 5. The maximum torque of isokinetic muscle strength (at 180°/sec) was strongest in the judo players while that of the boxing players was weak. Both of the knee extensor and flexor strength were significantly different among the three sports players (p<0.05). 6. Two index of the total work done of relative torque (at 240°/s), the knee extensor and flexor strength, were not present significant differences among the three sports players (p<0.05). As results of present study, the differences in details of body composition and the isokinetic muscle strength due to characteristics of each sports were revealed although the three combat sports are similar each other. In addition, it was inferred that the unbalance between both of the knee extensor and flexor was caused by game techniques and training programs. The players of these sports must beat off opponent using the continuous movement of center of gravity, thus, development of training program is required to enhance the balanced muscles between the upper/lower and right/left parts of body. The subjects in this study were limited to male combat sports players in training at a high school. Moreover, number of players was small and weight class was not considered. Therefore, these results are insufficient to generalize. An expansion of subjects and comparison by weight class are needed in further study.
