Recently, simulations based on supercomputing, high-performance clusters and cloud computing are being widely utilized not only in research, but also in practical applications including education, society, healthcare, economy, defense, and public services. These environments have allowed mathematical modeling and computer simulation to solve complex engineering problems in computational science. Increasingly the use of computer simulation, the researchers need a web-based simulation environments to be free of time and spatial constraints, and maximized the use of web-based simulation environments for the problem solving. A simulation environment can be composed by components such as preprocessors, solvers, visualization tools, computing resource managers, and job schedulers. As no standardized schema to interoperate these components in simulation environments have been proposed so far, most of current environments provide functionalities to support particular solver in particular scientific areas. Here, we propose the application-domain neutral simulation framework that can be contained of a various solver to be used for the problem solving. For the general-purpose simulation framework, we designed the meta-data schema of the solver, used to service a web-based simulation environment via our proposed simulation framework. For effective preservation of extensible meta-data sets of simulation softwares, the storage system has been designed based on a Not-only SQL (NoSQL) database (DB) class, which is widely known to be good to preserve unstructured data and is thus one of suitable solutions to increase the extensibility of software meta-data schema. Also, in consideration of scalability of component interactions and generality of interface, we implemented the REST(Representational State Transfer) interface for registration and management of meta information. To evaluate the usefulness and functionality of the our proposed schema and simulation software management framework, we developed a web-based simulation environment for the fields of nano-physics and computational chemistry. The implemented web-based simulation environments currently serve a total of twenty simulation softwares that are quite useful for educations of the core basics in semiconductor engineering and chemistry engineering, and researches of electronic structures in finite nanoscale devices. We remark that a total of 163 undergraduate/graduate students in electrical engineering, material engineering and physics in six universities of South Korea, have utilized the simulation environments extensively for educations in 2012 Fall semester. Here, we show the proposed a standard set of meta-data schema and simulation software management framework that can flexibly handle various simulation softwares in various computational scientific areas. Our meta-data schema and key technologies are not limited to nano-physics and computational chemistry as the independent structure enables diverse applications in other fields. Thus, we expect our results to be applied in computational fluid dynamics, computational design, structural dynamics and fields dependent on computational science research.
