As one of the intensive and elective subjects among social studies for Korean highschool students, 'East Asian History' was established after a short development period of three months (from December 2006 to February 2007). Although the curriculum development is, in a general sense, through reflecting the research results done by the world of academia, 'East Asian History' was published in pursuit of enhancing students' understanding of the East Asian region. To accomplish this goal, realistic needs were taken into account such as educating students about growing attempts for distorting history by China and Japan, reflecting the current methodology for teaching history, and acknowledging the demand for block economy led by three countries - Korea, China, and Japan. Set up slapdash, the above mentioned subject, however, includes two major problems. First, there can't be found any evident research results from the academic community which would be enough to support the subject 'East Asian History'. Though we can find, in historian communities, a variety of discourses on East Asia, it is hard to say those discussions are directly related to the subject of East Asian history and its curriculum. This eventually led to school teachers' difficulties to understand the contents of the textbook 'East Asian History' in light of the failure to offer them any reference from which they understand the contents. Second, two problems arose with the textbook 'East Asian History': the one is the way it is described and the other is its quantity. The problem with its description is that the textbook encyclopedically enumerates the histories of each country, rather than relating them in an organic way. This, after all, makes students recognize East Asia not as one single area having issues in common but as a few separate ones with more differences. On top of this comes the problem with its quantity that must be pointed out. The contents of the book being superfluous, the subject is likely to change from what should be understood to what should be memorized. As a survey result reveals, this in turn gave rise to somewhat negative response, more from the students who already studied the history of East Asia than from the ones who did not, on the needs to study the subject. In order to effectively cover the discourse on East Asia which are currently being dealt with in the field of academia and at the same time to satisfy the purpose of introducing the subject, a change in the textbook should take place which includes the attempt to reduce the volume and focus on commonness shared by East Asian countries. This eventually will meet the purpose of the subject, combine the discussions of academia with the contents of textbook, and above all be a significant endeavor to make the subject one with which students can appreciate East Asia's past and present and get perspectives on the future.
