ABSTRACT A Study on Development of a Simplified PMV Regression Model in an Office Building Sung-Jun, Yun Dept. of Architectural Engineering Graduate School University of Seoul Advised by Professor Jung-Ho, Huh Various measures have been taken across the world in response to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which has led to the establishment of greenhouse gas reduction goals and carbon emission trading mandates. In South Korea, the objective has been to conserve energy while minimizing damages to economic growth; thus, methods to reduce energy losses in buildings have been investigated since such methods have a relatively small influence on the national economy. Regulations regarding indoor temperature controls have been accordingly strengthened. However, the energy-saving effect of these changes to facility operation were accompanied by thermal discomfort in occupants who work indoors, which led to reduced work efficiency. In order to address these problems, therefore, several recently published studies have investigated thermal comfort controls that can reduce air-conditioning energy use while satisfying the thermal comfort needs of occupants. The occupant’s viewpoint is reflected when a thermal comfort control is applied. This leads to energy saving via reduction of unnecessary air conditioning arising from temperature control and also has a positive effect on work efficacy by satisfying the thermal comfort needs of the worker. However, thermal comfort control is more difficult than temperature control according to the existing standard, because more variables are involved in the former. Moreover, due to the additional costs of multiple measuring sensors, the additional time required, and the greater possibility for errors, there are few practical applications in South Korea or in other countries. The root cause of these issues is the large number of variables used in thermal comfort control; thus, simplification methods for reducing the large number of PMV variables have to be found. The present study used EnergyPlus, a program with high accuracy for thermal comfort control prediction, to model an actual office building. A PMV regression analysis was conducted for this model based on a database of the PMV variables. PMV regression model simplification was completed through sensitivity analysis, and the Energy Management System (EMS) in EnergyPlus was used to establish a simplified PMV regression analysis-based thermal comfort control. The main results obtained from the present study are as follows : 1) When the simplified PMV regression model’s deviation from the Fanger PMV model was confirmed through RMSE and MAE, both the summer and winter seasons had a deviation less than 0.1. Thus, it is thought that the simple PMV regression model may replace the existing Fanger PMV model. 2) When sensitivity analyses were conducted on the interior and the perimeters of an actual office building through the PMV regression model, the variables were ordered as mean radiation temperature ≈ indoor air temperature > relative humidity. Based on this information, variables with a low degree of influence were fixed at a single value to simplify the PMV regression model. 3) When the thermal comfort controls based on simplified PMV model and the Fanger PMV model were applied to the building model, it was confirmed that both controls met the thermal comfort range in more than 90% of cases during the air conditioning period. Further, it was confirmed that both controls maintained a control temperature that satisfied the control PMV, which is a characteristic of thermal comfort control. 4) The thermal comfort controls based on the simple PMV regression model and the Fanger PMV model were found to have an average indoor temperature setting of approximately 24℃ during the summer season (1st July to 31st August) and approximately 20℃ during the winter season (1st December to 28st February) Each of these control methods were found to be effective in terms of air-conditioning energy savings and thermal comfort compared to temperature controls at 20℃ and 24℃ respectively.
