When concrete is immersed in artificial seawater in a laboratory to investigate the chloride-ion penetration characteristics of concrete, the artificial seawater concentration is applied as the surface chloride concentration in the general solution of Fick's second law of diffusion. In this study, based on the theory, a basic model for predicting salt damage was made in the laboratory experiment, and a maintenance simulation system was developed by constructing a numerical model using the basic model. To minimize the difference between laboratory accelerated experiment and on-site structure, the basic model was modified through data trends by periodically analyzing the specimens, which were exposed to marine environment for a long period of time, following the experimental plan. The chloride content distribution of 6 marine concrete structures, which were completed about 30 years ago, was analyzed to test the model while modifying the basic model by analyzing the on-site exposure specimens during 5 years. The chloride penetration coefficient for the interior of concrete tends to change with time due to the improvement in the degree of hydration and pore structure. Therefore, in this paper, an equation, which is expressed as a function of time, was applied to the chloride penetration coefficient. In the basic model equation for predicting chloride, the surface chloride content was modified to be α times the surface chloride concentration, reflecting the research which suggested that the chloride concentration in concrete could gradually increase under dry-wet cycling due to the effect of evapotranspiration within the pores. The data predicted from the modified model was compared with the field data, and by estimating the timing of threshold chloride content (i.e., repair time), it was suggested that the model and maintenance system proposed in this paper can be used for estimating the chloride penetration profile in the intertidal zone and predicting the repair cost. In addition, in case of chloride penetration, the alternative analysis for each maintenance scenario was carried out with respect to the recover method which removes a certain depth of concrete and restores the original shape with new concrete and the surface repair method which reduces the chloride-ion penetration speed. Regarding the target structure of alternative analysis, the simulation results for the 2 piers of the marine structure located on the southwestern coast indicated that for the pier of X structure, salt damage did not occur even after 90 years at a depth of 10cm which is assumed to be the position of reinforcement. Therefore, it was concluded that salt damage is not a problem even though the target service life is set to more than 100 years. The surface repair method incurs lower cost for single construction than the recover method. However, though the surface repair condition is maintained similar to the initial condition at time of completion, the recover method, which is constructed every 20 years, experiences less salt damage after about 65 years. Therefore, the recover method constructed every 20 years is found to have better effect than the surface repair method constructed every 5 years despite the fact that lower maintenance cost is incurred. The simulation results for the pier of Y structure, listed from highest to lowest cost, were the recover and surface repair construction every 10 years, the surface repair construction every 5 years, and the recover and surface repair construction every 20 years. For the recover and surface repair construction every 20 years, there is a possibility of reinforcement corrosion after 62 years, and thus the recover method is essential if the target service life is more than 62 years. Most of the large-scale marine concrete structures are the major national social overhead capital. If the system developed in this paper is applied to the efficient maintenance of these structures, it will be possible to secure the budget and implement the optimal management at an appropriate time and to have the expected effects such as the extended life span of the structure, disaster prevention, and environmental conservation.
