The Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is the electricity generating system using temperature difference between surface water and deep ocean water. However, the cycle efficiency of OTEC depends on the temperature of surface ocean water. And, it will be more effective when it has temperature difference above 20 ℃. Hence, it is difficult to applying OTEC at intermediate and high latitude because the period to satisfy the temperature difference criterion is short. In this study, therefore, Combined Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (C-OTEC) was studied.
C-OTEC utilizes exhaust steam from power plants in place of surface layer water, thus avoiding dependence upon ocean surface temperature. Because C-OTEC uses exhausted steam as a heat source, a stable source of steam is required. If C-OTEC is applied to Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), system availability will be improved because NPPs are operated as base load plants and have high availability. And, if C-OTEC is applied to NPPs, C-OTEC can give additional cooling function. Through this function, electricity loss of NPPs by high surface temperature at summer season can be compensated.
In this study, R134A refrigerant was selected as the working fluid. Cycle modeling was performed using Engineering Equation Solver (EES), which is useful for calculating thermodynamic properties. A sensitivity study of cycle efficiency was performed by varying the dominant variables of component performance. The application of C-OTEC to NPPs was simulated using Performance Evaluation of Power System Efficiency (PEPSE) software, providing analysis of the effects on plant efficiency and performance.
