This dissertation aims to reinterpret the ancient buddhist scripture Dalma-iljang-geum(達磨一掌金. Dharma's Golden teaching to comprehend the destiny imprinted in the palm of your hand) and to construct the personality type theory. This scripture is one of the esoteric Buddhist conjury books which grasps the destiny of person, with the theoretical foundation of East Asian Buddhism and the Yin-Yang theory. This system classifies the characteristic of persons according to innate common desires. These desires correspond to the three poisons in Buddhism. It can be categorized that three poisons as a possessive desires become the cause of negative traits, and three learnings are the ontological desires with positive traits. Buddhism says that these desires are the force of karma. According to Buddhist three realms(dhātu) and six destinies(gati), the particular force of karma makes persons possess particular consciousness and dwell in the equivalent realm or destiny. Three poisons are the agents that make persons be born in three evil worlds like the realm of hells, the realm of animals, and the realm of hungry ghosts, while three learnings make persons be born in three good worlds like the realm of gods, the realm of asura, and the realm of man after getting rid of three poisons. Such as the theory of karma and the theory of transmigration in Buddhism combine with eastern and western astrology, which emphasize the importance of natal point of time, and form the individually specified personality type. We should like to modernly interpret this Buddhist logic, and to establish typologically intelligible system, and thus to name it Karma Ethos. Karma Ethos means that Karma dwells in, it also suggests the personal type theory which understand the persons' traits formed by the force of karma. To emphasize the importance of natal point of time is because of the cosmological premise which reflected the particular characteristics into person born in particular point of time. It embodies concretely by changing naturally born year, born month, born day, and born time into the symbols of twelve earthly branches. These symbols have a relationship with six worlds, and this is the distinct features of Dalma-iljang-geum. That is to say, it combines the East Asian Buddhism with the East Asian physics based on the Yin-Yang theory. Twelve earthly branches correspond to four seasons, twelve months, and also six worlds. In Dalma-iljang-geum, being get rid of the realm of hells among six realms, and adding the realm of Buddha, it modifies the traditional concepts of six realms. Forming groups of two earthly branches, working together with opposite side earthly branch in circulating structure, and then six realms are corresponded. The axis of rat and horse in south and north are equal to the realm of buddha, the rabbit and hen in East and West are equal to the realm of animals, the ox and sheep are equal to the realm of hungry ghosts, tiger and monkey are equal to the realm of man, and snake and pig are equal to the realm of gods. The diagram of destiny consists of nested circles, placing in order, from inside-twelve earthly branches, six realms, twelve stars to outside traits languages coming from inside's contents. These traits languages sometimes are mixed with foretelling languages, however if changing them into psycholexical languages, and making languages indicating traits, we can have six bad traits or virtues and six good traits. They originated from the desires of six realms, personality traits of persons can be classified by them. When classifying a person, twelve earthly branches of born year are important. These twelve earthly branches are sorted into four classifications by the principle of uniting three earthly branches, and these classifications consist of Tree, Fire, Metal and Aqua standing for the forces of four seasons. By means of uniting three earthly branches, the types of persons are comprised of four, and can be formulated by basic 4-types. Karma Ethos's basic 4-types are made up of M-type, F-type, T-type, and A-type. Basic 4-types develop into combination types, working in conjunction with each other. This is because born year, born month, born day, born time have to be considered. The common features of Karma Ethos's basic 4-types arise from combining the structures of uniting three earthly branches with the qualities of four seasons. However, Karma Ethos is not static. It can be divided into two levels; well-integrated high level and ill-integrated low level, according to the average level of a person's integration. M-type is a skeptics at the average level. But ill-integrated low level may become a cynical skeptics or a pathological pessimist. If well-integrated high level, pragmatic and intellectual skeptics like a Voltairian. F-type is a idealist at the average level. But ill-integrated low level is idealist without principle, seeking for the bubble reputation or indulging in wide knowledge. If well-integrated high level, a universal idealist. T-type is a optimist at the average level. But ill-integrated low level is a idealist without self-confidence. If well-integrated high level, a reformative optimist. A-type is a philanthropist at the average level. But ill-integrated low level is a man of the world or man in the street, a narrow paternalist, and hypocrite like a wolf in sheep's clothing. If well-integrated high level, a universal philanthropist. Each types are not static. However, if treating the desire of three poisons appropriately, we can head in the growth direction, otherwise suffering from increasing psychological distress. This means that the two ways of transformation and downfall can be selective. The method to treat three poisons appropriately is the way to transform, and is a concrete application in psychotherapy. There are two directions, which is the method to make effective use of inner resources and to depend on the outer authorities.
