As Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Corporate Sustainability Management (CSM) became important evaluation criteria for company valuation and investment, International Standardization Organization (ISO) launched ISO 26000, an International Standard providing guidelines for social responsibility, in 2010. In Korea while the government has supported Korean culture and arts since the establishment of Fund for the Promotion of Culture in 1973, large corporations have also actively supported the arts and culture sector for various CSR purposes. Whereas many CSR activities are related to social welfare and environment protection, Corporate Mecenat Activities which support artists and contribute to the development of arts and culture is known to be one of the important CSR activities that improve the image of corporations according to various research results. Corporate Mecenat Activity is used as a vehicle to communicate with customers and preferred by corporations that are willing to build social trust at relatively lower cost than high advertising expense. This thesis uses Kazuhiro Kado’s frameworks and Philip Kotler’s marketing theory to analyze and compare Corporate Mecenat Activity patterns between Korean companies - Kumho Asiana and CJ - and Japanese companies - SONY and Asahi Group Holdings – that received Mecenat Awards for Music Culture from Korea Mecenat Association and Japan Association for Corporate Support of the Arts respectively. This study also explains the current trend and problems of Corporate Mecenat Activities in Korea and Japan, and provides suggestions for improvement based on comparison and analysis. The pattern analysis by Kado’s frameworks shows the following results. First, companies have consistently conducted Corporate Mecenat Activities through their foundations regardless of the nature of their main business. Second, Corporate Mecenat Activity belongs to ‘Socially Responsible Business Practices Type’ which support culture, arts, education through infrastructure construction. Third, the number of traditional corporate philanthropic practices of endowment without human capital input is decreasing, which clearly implies that active human resource utilization is crucial for Corporate Mecenat Activities nowadays. Compared to Japan, Korea needs to encourage more local governments and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to be actively involved in Corporate Mecenat Activities for betterment of the culture industry. For example, contrary to the fact that 60% of Japanese company foundations are located outside of Tokyo, 87% of Korean company foundations are located in Seoul and Gyeonggi metropolitan area. Thus local companies’ active participation in Corporate Mecenat Activities is necessary to protect and develop local traditional cultures in Korea. Small-size companies need to support the arts and culture sector that is related to their main business in creative and low-cost ways and big companies with relatively large resource are encouraged to support arts and culture regardless of characteristics of their business through voluntary CSR activities as good corporate citizens. Because many companies’ purpose is to maximize profit, they tend to reduce their social contribution cost during economic downturn and increase the cost when they face any scandal that incurs negative corporate image. However, this study concludes that companies that are actively involved in Corporate Mecenat Activities tend to operate business highly successfully based on the awareness of companies’ social responsibilities and the importance of positive corporate image. Therefore, what is currently important for companies is not to focus on profit-maximization but to establish constant and long-term plans that create economic and social value through Corporate Mecenat Activities and foster a win-win environment for all relevant social participants including companies, artists, and citizens who will benefit from Corporate Mecenat Activities and eventually become loyal customers of the companies.
