Composite materials refer to at least two different types of materials designed to satisfy engineering needs by counteracting the flaws of each material using their characteristics, and materials with polymer (high molecule) matrix are called‘polymeric matrix composites’(PMC). The most representative type of them is 'fiber reinforced plastic' (FRP). Polymer matrix composites counteract the flaws of a single polymer material, the weak mechanical strength and heat resistance, and maintain its strengths such as corrosion resistance, formability, lightness, and cost-effectiveness. In addition, performance can be improved through various materials and they can be applied to a wide variety of areas, making polymeric matrix composites attractive enough to be used in numerous fields of modern society. However, polymeric matrix composites are mostly perceived as an engineering material in Korea, prompting this study to explore their the potential as a crafts material. This study is presented as follows. First, the history of polymeric matrix composites since the emergence of glass fiber reinforced plastics in 1940 is described, and the research and explanation were done with focus on well-known fiber reinforced plastics to mitigate the difficulties associated with the technical terminology, 'polymeric matrix composites'. In addition, a chair made with polymeric matrix composites was introduced as an example. Furthermore, to verify their suitability as a crafts material, they were actually used in making furniture, plates, ornaments, and interior accessories that are prolifically produced in the crafts industry. The focus was molding process and components, considering the different creation methods from existing crafts works. As a result, the following characteristics of polymer composites were identified as aesthetic representation methods of crafts creation. First, polymeric matrix composites have functional benefits such as lightness and durability. Second, aesthetic characteristics associated with materials, colors, and texture. Third, production of polymeric matrix composites can be processed manually. The three characteristics above are shared with general crafts materials, suggesting the suitability of polymeric matrix composites as a crafts material. Fourth, there were significant differences in functional aspects including weight and durability and aesthetic aspects including surface texture, color, and luster, depending on the combination of components and molding methods. Although such aspects are different from general crafts materials, they can be perceived as an advantage that provides diversity to the aesthetic representation methods of crafts. In conclusion, polymeric matrix composites make it possible to create shapes that cannot be created by general crafts materials through diverse combination of components and satisfy the unique function above a certain level. It confirms the value of polymeric matrix composites as a crafts material.
