Abstract Research on the Formation of Painter Society in Modern Jeollabuk-do -Focusing on Korean Painting- Park Sung-Soo Department of fine Arts The Graduate School Chonbuk National University Directed by Professor Lee Cheol-Ryang In Jeollabuk-do, traditional art and culture such as folk song folklore, and folk arts remain in existence and thus has been called a city of culture and art. Also in the modern times, active and creative activities in the painting field has been in place in Jeollabuk-do, well-matching the reputation of Jeollabuk-do. Rivers including Geum, Mangyeong, Yeongsan, Dongjin, and Seomjin flows from north to south and the Honam plain, the largest breadbasket of Korea, is situated in Jeollabuk-do area. As a result, rice became the primary product and the region was able to achieve abundant cultural assets. Affluent life was the matrix for diverse art. Also, remoteness from the central region granted unique cultural characteristics to Jeollabuk-do. Compared to other regions, language, arts, and culture of Jeollabuk-do show oustanding and strong features and at the same time the original form has been maintained relatively well and has been passed down through generations. However, in case of painting field of Jeollabuk-do, the aspects of painters are categorized into two. First is literary painters who painted in the Literary Painting style, which became famous by Kim Jung-Hee in the late Chosun period. Due to stable environmental condition, the region was populated by classical scholars. As a result, paintings in literary artist's style, which the scholars enjoyed painting, were able to be successful in modern times as well in Jeollabuk-do. Contemporary exemplary literary painters are Seok Jeong, Lee Jeong-Jik, Byeok Ha, Jo Joo-Seung, Yoo Jae, and Song Ki-Myeon. Another aspect is career painters who painted for living. The characteristics of these painters is that they did not limit themselves to a specific group or style and painted freely and variously in terms of ideology, style, and theme. Exemplary career painters are Seok Ji, Chae Yong-Shin, and the brothers Hwang Jong-Ha, Hwang Seong-Ha, Hwang Kyung-Ha, and Hwang Yong-Ha. Modern Jeollabuk-do painter society was more active than ever before. The reason why modern Jeollabuk-do painter society was able to be formed can be credited to national political condition. Literary painters of Jeollabuk-do during the addled modern period may had repulsion since the colonization of Korea by Japan. When the nation fell into confusion and chaos, and when achieving government position became very difficult, the painters intended to reveal nationalism through paintings and calligraphic works. This became the opportunity to focus on painting and calligraphy. For career painters, the reason why they were able to carry out vital creative activities in modern period was because distribution of paintings in central and rural regions became easier due to expansion of market after the development of production and monetary economy. Also, the abolishment of caste system following Gabo Revolution allowed the increase in classes who wanted to possess paintings and this increased demand for paintings. This increase became the foundation for career painters who painted for living. By observing the backgroud how the modern painter society in Jeollabuk-do was able to be formed, it is expected to serve as the opportunity for researches on modern period paintings to achieve great progress.
