ABSTRACT Hidden Stories in the Kindergarten Toilet of a Mixed-Age Grouping Seo, Youn Sil Major in Early Childhood Education Dept. of Education Graduate School of Education Chunbuk National University Advised by Byung-Gee Bak This study was focused on the neglected environment in the early childhood educational field and is aimed to understand the early children’s culture in the toilet, which was easily passed by rather than the classroom. From the point of view of an early children in the mixed-age grouping, what the toilet meant and which experience happened were investigated through the ethnographic research method. To achieve this, the following research questions were set up. 1. Which situation makes the early children in the mixed-age grouping go to the toilet? 2. Which experience do the early children in the mixed-age grouping have in the toilet? 3. Which empirical difference at age do the early children in the mixed-age grouping present? 4. Which experience do the early children have according to the spatial characteristic in the kindergarten toilet? This study was carried out for a researcher to observe 35 early children in a class of the mixed-age grouping, who were 3 to 5 years old and who were reorganized after taking the basic curriculum courses in a kindergarten located in J city. The observations were made 5 times a week. And 20 observations from January 7, 2013 to February 4, 2013 and 5 observations from April 22, 2013 to April 26, 2013, in total 25 ones, were made. From 2:10 pm which was the start time of after-school programs to 5:10 pm which was the time of returning home, participatory observation, video recording, voice recording, and a note-taking were combined at the entrance connected to the classroom and the toilet, at the hallway in front of the toilet, and inside the toilet. A teacher participated as a passive participant in this study. And so as to understand the early children’s toilet culture, the teacher tried to understand their toilet culture from their point of view. According to the research questions, the results of this study are as the following. 1. The early children in the mixed-age grouping went to the toilet with the first reason to meet their own need and with the second reason to accomplish their purposes. 2. The early children in the mixed-age grouping, at first, expressed emotion by adjusting and controlling emotion or empathy, failing to adust emotion, and so on. Second, social interaction among the same age of the early children group, such as forming or disbanding social relationship, happened in the toilet. Third, the early children did secret things in the toilet, which was set up out of their teacher’s control. For example, bringing things not allowed and showing off or trading them, littering food, talking about gender, excreting in secret, masturbating and so on were observed. Forth, the early children were observed to look in the toilet with several reasons, for example, sex curiosity, confirming inside, observing other cultures, and showing their friendship. Fifth, the early children were observed to use the toilet to resolve their physiological requirements like sanitation and excretion. Sixth, the early children were observed in the toilet to learn the maintenance of order and public rules as a group. 3. The early children in the mixed-age grouping experienced the differences at age differently. First, in the case for the 4 to 5 year old early children to live as the senior, they existed as people of authority, attentive people and group members, and they felt stressful as the senior. Second, in the case for the younger early children to live as the junior, they existed to hand over some knowledge or to learn some expressions, and they felt stressful as well. Third, in the case to live as a member of the community, the early children helped one another, encouraged others, and learn natural education routinely. 4. According to the spatial characteristic in the kindergarten toilet, the early children were observed to regard their toilet as an open space for everyone or a spatial space, different from their classroom. By this study, the spacial cultures in the toilet overlooked and neglected by teachers were focused on, and this study shows that there are many experiences in the toilet as much as in the classroom. This study provides information of the early children’s toilet; prediction, protection, and treatment, and this study will be helpful for teachers to extend knowledge about the early children. Also, on the social contextual aspect, this study shows to understand the relationship of the mixed-age group, and this study has the meaning on throwing lights on the culture of the toilet, which is the space for only the early children with teachers’absence. Finally, on the environmental aspect, this study represents practical basic data to make toilets, which the early children can use as the educational environment, a pleasant and available space to them.
