In this thesis, we developed a science education program to understand mechanics of bridges. This program, which should be useful to teachers as a teaching material, aims at helping (gifted) elementary school students acquire the pre-knowledge to comprehend the underlying mechanical principle of bridges. For this goal, we took the following three, mutually related, approaches. First, in order to analyze forces acting on a truss bridge, we employed two methods: the method of panel point, which basically uses equilibrium conditions of force, and the method of section, which basically uses equilibrium conditions of moment. Using the method of panel point, we can calculate the force acting on each panel point from one end of the bridge step by step. Using the method of section, we can calculate the force acting on a particular panel point directly. We applied the aforementioned methods to understand a Howe truss bridge. Second, in order to verify the approach, we employed the following scheme. We first calculated the force acting on a Warren truss bridge and verified this experimentally by constructing such a bridge with the Truss Bridges Set from Pasco. Third, we analyzed forces acting on the I-35W bridge, a Warren truss bridge with vertical beams, which was located over the Mississippi river in Minneapolis, USA and collapsed in 2007, by the method of section. We were able to understand why the bridge collapsed based on various factors acting on the bridge such as dead loads, live loads, and construction loads, which were available from NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) reports and research journals about structural mechanics. From this study, we imagine that if this program is successfully developed for (gifted) elementary school students, they would have a better grasp on the concept of force and consequently have better chance to understand the middle-school physics.
