Although the ‘Teaching English in English’ policy of the Korean Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development has been in force for over 10 years, Korean is still often used in many Korean English classes. Witnessing the gap between the policy and actual class situations, I wished to come up with systematic theories for the potential advantages of the use of Korean for English education in the Korean context.
This study focuses on how Code Switching in Reading aloud activities affect primary school students’ vocabulary acquisition and interest, and suggests Code Switching in Reading aloud activities as an efficacious methodology for teaching English vocabulary in a primary school classroom setting. This will be shown in comparison with TEE (Teaching English in English) in Reading aloud activities. The subjects of inquiry for the aforementioned research purposes are as follows:
Firstly, is Code Switching in Reading aloud activities effective in promoting primary school students’ vocabulary acquisition?
Secondly, do the vocabulary acquisition effects of Code Switching in Reading aloud activities vary according to the part of speech (noun, adjective, verb)?
Thirdly, do the vocabulary acquisition effects of Code Switching in Reading aloud activities vary according to the learner’s level?
Fourthly, does Code Switching in Reading aloud activities help boost primary school students’ interest in reading English books?
In order to resolve the subjects of inquiry, 3 weeks of experiment classes with three English story books were held with 102 third graders from four classes of E primary school in Seoul. There was one experiment group of 50 students and one comparison group of 52 students. For the experiment group, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities was implemented while for the comparison group, Reading aloud activities were conducted using the Teaching English in English methodology.
To allow for precise measurement of the two method’s effect on vocabulary acquisition for different parts of speech, the vocabulary pre-test had an equal proportion of nouns, adjectives and verbs. Moreover, in order to ascertain the effect of Code Switching in Reading aloud activities according to the learner’s level, a vocabulary pre-test was taken. Based on the results of that, the experiment group was divided into an upper and lower level. The results were compared between the two level groups in the experiment group.
I looked at how much vocabulary and interest had improved in the experiment group and the comparison group, utilizing the results of the vocabulary pre/post tests and the interest pre/post tests. The after-experiment results were examined using SPSS 18.0 to analyze with regards to each subject of inquiry.
Firstly, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities was confirmed to be effective in teaching vocabulary to primary school students.
Secondly, the effects of Code Switching in Reading aloud activities on vocabulary acquisition do vary based on the part of speech (noun, adjective and verb). It was shown that Code Switching in Reading aloud activities was particularly effective in teaching adjective, the meaning of which is relatively more difficult to convey through visual tools than that of nouns or verbs.
Thirdly, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities affects vocabulary acquisition differently based on the learner’s level. Code Switching in Reading aloud activities was especially effective for the lower-level students.
Fourthly, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities had a positive influence on primary school students’ interest.
The implications of this experiment are as follows.
Firstly, as Code Switching in Reading aloud activities was demonstrated to be effective towards primary school students’ vocabulary acquisition, it can now contribute to creating a theoretical background for the Code Switching method. Therefore, even teachers who had trouble in teaching English in English due to their poor communicative English skills can now read aloud more confidently for the class using the Code Switching method during discretionary time, since it is now proven to be effective.
Secondly, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities is more effective for learning adjectives, the meaning of which is relatively more difficult to convey through visual tools than that of nouns or verbs than Teaching English in English in Reading aloud.
Thirdly, Code Switching in Reading aloud activities is more effective for lower level students when learning vocabulary.
Fourthly, the fact that the group which received Code Switching in Reading aloud activities had increased interest could be seen in that they understood better the vocabulary and the content of the English stories than the group which received Teaching English in English in Reading aloud.
I hope that the above results (Code Switching in Reading aloud activities is effective for raising interest and improving vocabulary for primary school students, it is more effective on the acquisition of adjectives, the meaning of which is relatively more difficult to convey through visual tools than that of nouns or verbs, lower level students have improved more in English vocabulary.) will be put into practice in actual English classes and could contribute to the development of primary school students' English vocabulary.
Furthermore, considering that Code Switching can play a useful scaffolding role in primary school students’ vocabulary acquisition, I hope that it can consolidate its place as an effective teaching method for Second Language Acquisition and believe it could and should be productively integrated into a better Teaching English in English policy in the near future.
