Abstract
The Study of Ventilation of a High-Rise Building
due to External Wind
The recent trend of construction market shows that bigger, high-rise buildings are taking up great share. This trend is applied in housing market as well, as high-rise residential buildings are widely built in cities. In metropolitan cities like Seoul and other newly developed cities near Seoul, in particular, a number of high-rise buildings have been built due to the difficulty of securing new land and plans to increase floor area ratio in case of redevelopment. While residents were more interested in direction of houses in the past, their focus has shifted to the view of houses, which leads to construction of a number of high-rise residential apartment buildings. Landmark skyscrapers have been built both at home and abroad. Good examples abroad include Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Taipei 2010 in Taiwan, Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai while Korea also has Doosan We‘ve the Zenith, built in Busan in 2011 as well as Jamsil Lottel World Tower and International Media Tower, which are under construction and in preparation stage, respectively.
These buildings, taller than 80 stories, are likely to experience significantly poor ventilation due to the stack effects and changes in external wind pressure. While mid/low story apartment buildings can receive fresh air from outside through open windows throughout the whole year, high-rise buildings cannot secure enough ventilation by opening up windows. The external wind velocity for construction design in Seoul is 2.2-2.5 m/s. However, the higher the story, the higher external wind velocity, so if residents on higher stories open their windows for ventilation, the heavy wind blows laundry or newspapers away and creates noise, for which residents make complaints. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the natural ventilation volume from cracks in closed windows and required ventilation volume so that if there is any lack or excess, necessary adjustment can be made and lacked ventilation volume can be secured.
Residential buildings like apartment have only heating and air- conditioning system installed and residents themselves should control ventilation. When polluted air is re-circulated, CO2 is accumulated in the house, and VOCs and HCHO coming from harmful construction materials may cause health problems for residents.
As indoor air pollution has serious impacts on health, it is mandated to establish natural or artificial ventilation system in apartment houses of more than 100 units. There is also installation and ventilation volume standard with 0.7 times. This study aims to examine ventilation characteristics of high-rise buildings per their height with low, mid and high story and identify measures to address their problems.
The results of the study are as follows:
This study is about characteristics of ventilation by external wind pressure in high-rise building of 300 meters by height. The study used CFD to calculate wind pressure of 10, 20, and 30 m/s wind in box-shaped high-rise buildings in the front and 45 degrees. Fan function data and pressure drop of heat recovery ventilation system and window opening was applied as a model, and EES program was used to calculate wind volume and reduced pressure of all wind channels. The results show that the higher wind velocity and the higher the height, the number of ventilation has increased, and it is important to design wind channels of high-rise buildings in consideration of impacts by external wind pressure.
The factors impacting the ventilation of high-rise buildings are categorized as external and internal ones. The stack effects and frequent changes in external wind pressure in the buildings are likely to lower the performance of indoor ventilation system. Therefore, it is imperative to supplement insufficient ventilation volume and provide needed ventilation required by the standard to each house in an energy-saving and environmentally-friendly way.
This study examined the impact and characteristics of external wind pressure on ventilation in high-rise building by each height and came to the following conclusion:
1. The result of calculating wind pressure by CFD showed that in frontal wind velocity per 10m/s 6.84Pa in low stories, 36.52Pa in mid stories, and 36.52Pa in high stories, in side wind velocity per 20m/s, -41.48Pa, -104.3Pa, -123.2 Pa, respectively, and in rear wind velocity per 30m/s, -72.68Pa, -137Pa, -193.2Pa, respectively.
2. Also, the calculated 45 degree wind pressure was 4.16Pa in low stories, 22.56Pa in mid stories, and 23.28Pa in high stories in frontal wind velocity per 10m/s, -87.67Pa, -91.15Pa, and -209.52 Pa side and rear wind velocity per 20m/s, respectively, and 24.59Pa, 203.58Pa, 247.89Pa respectively, in frontal wind velocity per 30m/s.
3. The calculated ventilation numbers of heat recovery ventilation devices in frontal wind pressure was 0.97, 0.99, and 1.03 times by hours per 10m/s, 20m/s, and 30m/s of wind velocity in low stories, respectively, 0.99, 1.08, and 1.22 times per 10, 20, 30m/s in mid stories, and 1.01, 1.11, and 1.29 times per 10, 20, 30m/s in high stories.
4. Comparing ventilation numbers per 10, 20, and 30 m/s of wind velocity, there was 2.1%, 7.9%, and 17.3% increase in mid stories compared to low stories, respectively, while 2.9%, 11.6%, and 24.9% increase in high stories.
5. Comparing ventilation numbers per height, there was 2.4% increase per 20m/s of wind velocity and 6.7% increase per 30m/s in low stories by 10m/s standard, 8.3% and 22.2% in mid stories, and 10.9% and 28.9% in high stories, respectively.
6. The calculated ventilation numbers of heat recovery ventilation devices in 45 degree wind pressure was 0.98, 1.02, and 1.07 times by hours per 10, 20, and 30m/s of wind velocity in low stories, respectively, 0.99, 1.05, and 1.16 times per 10, 20, and 30m/s in mid stories, and 1.01, 1.12, and 1.31 times per 10, 20,
