Drama therapy Case Study on a Child with Emotional Insecurity in Third-Culture : in use of role theory and performance원문보기

This thesis explores a drama therapy case on an immigrant child with emotional insecurity, and examines how the "role-play" helps children with emotional insecurity in third-culture and its positive influence on cognition and action. The case study takes a form of participatory research study and this involved a participant, whom had experienced migration more than three times before settling in Country A. The participant is suffering from behavior problems such as hyperactivity disorder, lying and violence caused by anxiety disorder due to a frequent change of circumstances and a culture gap within other cultures. In addition, psychological loneliness, isolation and insecurity of the child were aggravated because the parents (first generation immigrants) had not taken proper care of the child. The researcher understood the characteristic of this kind of insecurity from the perspective of 'Good-Enough Parenting' by Winnicott and explored psychological approach. The researcher set the target for behavior modification with assessment standards through analyzing the use of dramatic elements, changes in role system of the participant, and the structure of story, by applying an assessment of drama therapy. The results of this research are as follows: First, the diagnosis became clear in each session when 'role-playing' was used with examining dramatic elements, and it promoted a balanced growth because subsequent suggestions were allowed. Furthermore, this study developed a detailed assessment according to expression, body, space, intention, emotion and acting, which figured out to which level the participant reached in each role from 5 being achieved to 1 being insufficient. Secondly, changes in cognition and behavior were attained as behaviors in the dramatic reality were linked to the participant's life, and it can be noted in role mode and repeated pattern. Thirdly, the participant's positive cognition and behavioral change could be analyzed with more objective method as the manner of story making was examined by background, dramatis personae (characters), obstacles, a helper and aftermath, which is the dramatic approach by Alida Gersie. Role-based dramatic activities allowed the immigrant child with emotional insecurity to find inner home as a safe and secure space; and had positive influences on low frequency of insecurity and modification of violent behavior. By applying the concept of diagnostic role-playing by dramatherapists Robert J. Landy and David Read Johnson, this research developed a tool for the 'role-playing process for a child with emotional insecurity in Third-Culture' situations and more effectively promoted therapeutic intervention within sessions. This study has great significance in demonstrating that 'role'-based drama therapy, considered as proper for adults, could be applied in the case of children as well.
