A study on the experience and the context of women in prostitution : the dynamics of work and harm experience원문보기

Since 2004, the experience of women in prostitution is divided into forced or voluntary experience and is understood as fixed experiences by the Prostitution Act enforcement. This study aims to reveal a variety of the experiences and to identify the context of the experiences. For this study, data was collected by interview with eleven women in prostitution and these women participated in the purposeful sampling. While reviewing the literature related to prostitution, the collected data were analyzed.
As the result of this research, women in prostitution entrance process recognized prostitution as ‘an easy work to make money’and as ‘a voluntary selection’. But women in prostituion recognized voluntariness as ‘no force’in personal rights dimension, because this recognition was derived from the non-visible structural force in the context of judicial. Women who do not have skills, education, career are liked to get and the women are forced to choose the prostitutional job which offered room and support at the same time.
In maintenance process of prostitution, women experienced the mixture of work and harm. As women had experienced prostitution for a long time, debt related prostitution was accumulated. After all, prostitution was the negative income activity. Women’s bodies were treated as the items which men could purchase and owner could sell. Also women recognized prostitution as high-income activities because prostitution was inevitable, not optional experience.
After all, women in prostitution recognized prostitution as an easy work at the time women entered prostitution. However women in prostitution recognized the prostitution as a hard physical labor in the context of the sex industry type and as a service labor in the context of socio-economic and as an emotional Labor in the context of gender roles. In maintenance process of prostitution, women in prostitution experienced a multifaceted relationship with men. This experience of women means selling femininity and sexuality in the context of gender roles, and unequal trade relations.
Also women in prostitution recognized prostitution as various roles of owners, because the status of owners changed illegal actors since the Prostitution Act enforcement. Because women recognized prostitution as a work without alternative choice in the context of socio-economic and as a high-income activity in the context of the sex industry type, prostitution was the paradoxical experience that is inevitable.
Women in prostitution experienced lasting force in exit process and difficulty like exiting a swamp because of the debt. Because past experience means obstacles of the current life, women in prostitution want to separate past experience of prostitution from the present life but are still connected to the experiences. Because force factor like a debt has had no effect since the Prostitution Act enforcement and prostitution have routinized in the context of the sex industry type, the need for making money has occurred in the context of socio-economic, and then entrance and exit process have repeated. Concept of harm in the Prostitution Act has not matched women’s experience of harm, and the degree and extent of the experience of harm differ among women in prostitution, and therefore exit process of prostitution was contradictory process. Eventually exit process of prostitution was the escape from the harm experience.
Finally, this study revealed that prostitution is harm and work experiences and that experiences are mixed according to complex contexts. The dynamics of experience and the complex contexts raised the need of decriminalization of women on prostitution and the need of target expansion of social welfare policies and services for prostitution. For this, accessibility for women in prostitution should be improved and support system should be practical.
