Recently, human-adaptive electronic skin (E-skin) has attracted considerable attention because of its unique characteristics showing highly soft and light as a frontier ubiquitous platform. In particular, fabrication of sensitive tactile sensor devices via soft nanomaterials is desirable as an effective way to realize artificial human skin and manipulate versatile skin functions. Herein, for the first time, we report on high sensitive, flexible capacitive pressure and flexion sensors based on highly conductive carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber arrays incorporated with Ecoflex dielectric onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films by a facile but very effective methodology. Further, in this paper, we focus on systematically investigating sensor characteristics induced by the minute change of pressure as well as repeatability and reliability for sensing. To understand the sensing mechanism in more detail, a diameter and a surface morphology of conductive CNT fibers were controlled as effective factors, which enables to eventually derive the sensitivity of sensors from the capacitance change modulated by external pressure or strain. Firstly, we observed that in the low pressure regime, sensitivity of the sensors has been improved by an increase of a diameter of CNT fibers, which can be explained by the increase of capacitance change under the applied pressure because the larger CNT fibers relatively lead to the thinner Ecoflex dielectric layer compared to the smaller ones during solution casting process. Next, to improve the sensitivity of the CNT fiber sensors in the high pressure regime as well, fractal like Au flakes was selectively introduced to the surface of the conductive CNT fibers by electrochemical method. To be interest, the sensors with Au flakes-incorporated CNT fibers show higher sensitivity by four folds, which is due to the concentrated phenomenon of the applied pressure than just CNT fibers based sensors. Finally, to prove the feasibility of the proposed tactile sensors by us, we could successfully demonstrate the highly sensitive sensor arrays to allow a position detection under even ultra low pressure of 0.1kPa. Moreover, we found that the sensor arrays displayed much reliable response time, which indicates a potential application to bio-monitoring medical system. We believe that the use of highly conductive CNT fibers will be one of candidates as a potentially promising way to realize high sensitive, human-adaptive e-skin paradigm.
