Abstract This study aims to manage erosion control dam in Gyeongsangnam-do for being effective to prevent damages and disasters by analyzing types of damages after installing erosion control dam and figuring out frequency of each type of damages, characteristics and differences such as their forms and vulnerable points. 1. As the results to investigate 256 erosion control dams in Gyeongsangnam-do from 1986 to 2007, by year, before 2000, 96(37.5%) dams had been installed and 160(62.5%) dams have been installed since 2000. By region, Kimhae and Yangsan have most dams in urban area and for counties, Sancheong have most dams and then is followed by Hamyang, Hadong, Geochang and Habcheon in order and all counties are mainly mountains and forests(70%). By material, masonry dam are most with 126 dams(49.2%) and then concrete dam are 111(43.4%), concrete earth dam are 8(7.0%) and other(steel dam) is one(0.4%) in order. For installment of erosion control dam, reflecting citizens' opinions and national policies, areas to be installed and cost for the projects have been increasing annually. While the projects covered 3 dams with expense of 64,000,000 KRW in 1986, in 2007 it has been increased by 39 dams with expense of 9,220,000,000 KRW. 2. Among 256 dams for the study, 113 dams were reported with damages in main dam bodies and aprons. By type of damages, there were 74 leakages of erosion control dam, 25 cracks of dams and 85 destruction of the apron(partly overlapped in water leaks and cracks). By type of damage according to materials, in case of stone dams, there were most destruction of the apron and then water leakage and cracks followed. For concrete dam, there were most in water leakage and then destruction of the apron and cracks followed. For concrete earth dam, water leakage was most frequent and then destruction of the apron followed. 3. For leakage of erosion control dam, among 74 damaged dams, there were 39 masonry dams(52.7%), 30 concrete dams(40.5%) and 5 concrete earth dam(6.8%) in order. And this type of damage was frequent in dams with 5-10 years after their installment when installing dams were extended because of localized torrential rainfall and typhoons. This type was also frequent in construction sites with less than 100ha of drainage basin area, upper 30-40m of upper length, 4-6m of height and 1,000-2,000㎥ of volume of water. For types of damage by leaked part of erosion control dam, there were six types, shoulder root part, base rock part, base soil part, expansion joint part, main dam body(unequal cracks) and main dam body(separation of materials). 4. For cracks of erosion control dam, among 25 damaged dams, there were 21 concrete dams(84%) and 4 masonry dams(16.0%). And this type of damage was frequent in dams with 5-10 years after their installment. This type was also frequent in construction sites with less than 100ha of drainage basin area, upper 30-40m of upper length, 4-6m of height and 1,000-2,000㎥ of volume of water. For types of damage by cracked part of erosion control dam, there were 5 types, horizontal constructed joint part, expansion joint part, weep hole, main dam body(unequal cracks of plumb), main dam body(separation of materials). 5. For destruction of the apron erosion control dam, among 68 dams, there are 44 masonry dams(64.7%, 22 concrete dams(32.4%) and 2 concret earth dams(2.9%). This type of damages was frequent in masonry dams with 20 years and in concrete dams with 10-15 years, respectively. This type was also frequent in construction sites with less than 100ha of drainage basin area, upper 30-40m of upper length, 4-6m of height and 1,000-2,000㎥ or less than 1,000㎥ of volume of water. For types of destruction of the apron erosion control dam, there were 2 types, first part of apron and apron downside-end part. 6. For management of erosion control dam, in case of masonry dam, because water leakage of main dam body and destruction of the apron are frequent, when installing it, it is necessary to be careful for bed excavation site and washing materials, while in case of concrete dam, because of its frequent leakages by cracks of main dam body, it needs curing in low temperature, regulating amount of concrete casting per onetime and watering. And it also needs to be careful for constructing newly installed joint and weep hole, especially. Nowadays, as demands for projects of erosion control dam are increasing by projects on living area, quantity expansion rather than quality one seems to be a cause for damages and it needs to prepare systematically responses by type of damages, management manual and plan.
