ABSTRACT A Study of Shamanism in Hwang Suk Young’s Novels - With Emphasis on 『Guest』 and 『Baridegi』 Yoon Mi Lee Department of Korean Language & Literature Graduate School of Soongsil University The scientific development today makes our lives convenient in various ways. However, there are various adverse effects as well. The best example would be the deficiency of sentimentality and the isolation of emotional solidarity. People has significantly lost interests in ‘people’ themselves and the isolation of community awareness and the destruction of human characters are becoming serious day after day. People have been degraded into nothing more than products or material exchange, not the existence with original value. Therefore, literature is the only way to heal the desolateness of modern society. Literature has consoled people in the realm of existential and philosophical discourse for a long time. Therefore, the modern society where the development of science and civilization has been maximized needs to see the world from a literary perspective. This study began from the recognition that the solution to the various problems of the individuals and communities caused by the destruction of human characters and communities today could be found in the shamanistic process to resolve grudge. The attempt to resolve modern problems through the shamanistic behaviors and rituals outside rational thinking and scientific methods could be particularly effective when combined with the literary imagination. Hwang Suk Young is the artist chosen for this attempt. Hwang Suk Young is Korea’s leading writer who has focused on the aforementioned social issues and attempted to discover the true image of human in them. He depicts the various problems of the Korean society through traditional realism. Hwang said that he wants to decompose and reconfigure the realist style of the past and created 『Guest』, 『Shimcheong』, and 『Baridegi』, the three East Asian series one after another. 『Guest』 and 『Baridegi』 employed the Korean traditional styles of Jinoguigut and Seosamuga (epic ritual song). 『Guest』, the first of the series, borrowed the epic style of Jinoguigut and attempted the historical resolution by exploring the agonies in Korea’s modern history after the division of South and North. 『Baridegi』, the last of the series, addresses the adversity of a woman who escaped from the North Korean society facing an economic crisis in comparison to the Mythology of Bari, a Seosamuga. These two novels represent the style of new realistic literature which Hwang attempted by adopting Gut to modify the traditional method of realism. In order to examine the shamanistic characteristics of these two novels that adopted traditional Seosamuga, I focused on discussing the general characteristics of Shamanism in Chapter 2. Mircea Eliade’s study of shamanism was discussed to define shamanism. Then, I discussed the birth of true shaman, the rituals to become a shaman, and the fact that the shaman is an ‘agonized resolver’ himself/herself. I also discussed the method of ecstasy, which is the unique characteristic of shamanism in East Asian, including Korea. Korea particularly applies the sentimentality of grudge to various areas. Therefore, I focused on the meaning of grudge to Korean people and the spiritual view underlying shamanism in Korea. Chapter 3 compared Jinoguigut, the original shamanistic ritual of Korea, with the epic structure of Hwang’s 『Guest』 for similarities and differences. 『Guest』 is similar to Part 12 of Jinoguigut. This implies Hwang’s intention to approach the history of civil war and agony from the traditional style of Gut, rather than simple realism. He does not discuss the historical events, such as ‘the Massacre of Shincheon’, as a mere historical fact. He applies the shamanistic method of Jinoguigut to explore the substance of grudge and long for the originary resolution of grudge. Jinoguigut, through the process of reconciliation of the souls of those who killed one another, manifests the shamanistic meaning of Gut for the living. Chapter 4 compared Seosamuga 『Barigongju』 with the epic structure of 『Baridegi』 for similarities and differences. 『Baridegi』 is the novel that clearly shows the resolution of problems caused by the introduction of capitalism in Korea through shamanism. Bari, the main character of the popular 『Barigongju』, is a shamanistic character who became the god of death by completing the journey in India. However, Baridegi in 『Baridegi』 could not acquire the water of life after the journey in Hell. I tried to explore the meaning of water of life in the modern society. Also, I analyzed the process how Baridegi, the woman of adversity, became the healer for the deceased after her trip to Hell despite that she had failed to discover the water of life. I learned that the water of life, which Hwang expressed as ‘picture puzzle’, is what the modern people must discover. Finally, Chapter 5 discussed the literary value of Hwang Suk Young in Korea through 『Guest』 and 『Baridegi』. I concluded that 『Guest』 and 『Baridegi』 are the novels that encourage the modern people to pioneer the future of communities and how to do so by borrowing from the traditional styles of Korea. Hwang intends to resolve the problems of civilizations around the world through Korean literature that adopts the shamanistic tradition of Jinoguigut and Seosamuga. This implies his will to bring light to the modern society with Korean traditional styles. Hwang expanded his literary imagination to overcome the false desire and frustration around the world. It is significant because it is the new horizon of realism being explored by Hwang.
