This paper proposes the structure of a natural light reproduction system through an algorithm based on the color coordinates of natural light so to completely reproduce the characteristics of natural light (that vary in many ways depending on factors such as vision, the natural seasons and weather conditions) in windowless spaces. Existing lighting control systems were designed for specific purposes, such as to save energy and productivity enhancement, by dynamically reconstructing the characteristics of natural light following user-centered condition changes at certain times. In contrast, the system in this paper proposes to support a healthy light environment in interior spaces by reproducing the patterns of natural illumination at different periods. This system has a theoretical basis in circadian rhythm patterns encompassing users’ sleep-wake cycle and the rhythmical characteristics of natural light that consistently change over time. This system has three processes: First, the system surveys the characteristics of natural light and analyzes its progress over time as well as specific weather elements. Second, it extracts the control and the color coordinate rate of artificial lighting by applying a matching algorithm based on the color coordinates of natural light that are classified by weather conditions at different times. Here, we utilize Kruithof’s curve, which is a schematized version of the relationship between illuminance and color temperature for the artificial lighting’s control range. Finally, by applying the Melatonin Suppression Prediction Model, the system analyzes the change of melatonin secretion over time in order to assess the quality of the illumination environment provided by the extracted control rate. With this system users who work in conditions where they cannot recieve sufficient natural light but are exposed to artificial light - such as people who work in windowless rooms for a long time and shift workers who live contrary to normal circadian ryhthym patterns - will be able to improve their health through being exposed to a comfortable lighting environment that can naturally control and maintain their circadian rhythm patterns.
