This study is to demonstrate at the same time how a novel-based screen adaptation adds its contribution to the original story by making it clearer and more accessible to all, and how much it is derivative-especially for students involved in a Literature class-to content oneself essentially with watching a screen adaptation and considering it as a faithful equivalent of the authentic story. It will hopefully encourage viewers towards the reading of the source texts. As such, this research consists in comparing a written piece of Literature to one of its onscreen adaptations-in this precise case, Jane Austen versus Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice-by first detecting and then reporting the most striking differences between the authentic story and the adapted story, and finally assessing the positive and negative effects that those gaps originating from the adaptation produce on the authentic story. This study is structured around a general Introduction of both materials (Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice), plus further explanations about the way in which this research will be carried out, followed by a brief Literature Review highlighting the need for this research, then the body of this research presented in Chapter 3 to 5 and a final conclusion which comprises the results of this research. Some illustrations have been attached to the body part of the research whenever it was judged needed for lack of referential screen support and clarification. This research shows that Wright’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is beneficial to the authentic story by making explicit some of its most interesting but also very complex passages; notably by having recourse to many universal and cultural symbolisms-which rely on concrete images to represent deeper inner features of characters’ development, to numerous cinematic codes-which combined to the soundtrack serve to indicate and clarify the crucial moments of the story, and to blatant repetitive patterns-which seemingly serve as short-cuts to have the story simplified and accelerated. Paradoxically, those very same cinematic features which bring their contribution to clarify the original story onscreen also create striking gaps at the same time between the two stories (the story in the novel and the story in the film), causing the cinematic Literature to be ‘unfaithful’ to the authentic piece of written Literature, and ironically successful to a large audience of viewers. The results of this study will hopeful fulfill their final purpose to serve as a persuasive guideline example to encourage viewers of novel-based screen adaptations towards the reading of its authentic story.
