Searching for information is the starting point in planning tourism and also the most important process for tourism consumers. As typical experience goods, tourism products tend to heavily rely on information. Tourism consumers search for information from the diverse sources in order to find the information they need, and also to get more reliable sources of information. Social media is the information media that enables users to obtain the information of the vicarious experiences. Interaction among users, openness of information, sharing and participation are the characteristics of the social media that differentiates it from other information media. Social media transmits information which is based upon user’s personal experiences. It has the characteristics of an information media that shows network-based high interactivity through human and information exchanges among users. Information obtained via social media that is based on consumers’ experience is different from supplier-centered information in the sense that the former undergoes other information processing process and affects consumers. For this reason, it is important to identify the changes in consumer’s behavior following exposures to persuasive information from social media in order to understand the decision making process of the tourism consumer. The purpose of this study is to understand the information search process and the behavior changes of the tourism consumers in relation to social media’s convincing information processing process. The research was carried out accordingly. First, information processing process was interpreted based on Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to understand the changes in behavior following the social media’s convincing information. Also, social media users’ diverse motivation factors were configured based on the use and gratification theory to analyze users’ detailed motivation factors. Second, research model was presented through existing studies to verify the structural relationships between each component concepts, and the proposed hypotheses were verified using empirical analysis. Finally, this study drew out the following implications. First, four-dimensional factors, which are information seeking, entertainment, status seeking and relationship maintenance, were identified as the motivation factors for using the social media. Users who utilize the social media are not merely pursuing after direct information. Instead, they consider entertainment enjoyment and network communication important. Therefore, it is important not only to offer information level gratification, but also to form emotional sense of affinity, which is also interactive, in order to satisfy tourism consumers. Second, it was proved that the argument quality, which is a variable for verifying the central route of the social media’s information processing process, exerts significant effect on information seeking and status seeking, which are motivations for use. This demonstrates that the contents that are transmitted by social media stimulate users’ motivation. Meanwhile, the argument quality and entertainment did not manifest significant correlation, which shows that there is no correlation between information’s objective quality and users’ enjoyment. As for the source credibility that speaks for the surrounding route during information processing process, the credibility was proven to affect entertainment, status seeking and relationship maintenance. Thus, this study was able to verify that the desires such as social media’s interactivity, enjoyment and reputation, derive from the mutual reliability with information provider. Third, it was verified that information seeking, entertainment and relationship maintenance affect the willingness to continue to use and level of information sharing, which are users’ behavior intent. Meanwhile, status seeking did not affect behavior intent. Thus, social media’s social character, which is status seeking, does not affect change in users’ behavior. Fourth, the degree of social media’s intervention served as a variable that exerts mediating effect when it comes to the relationship between the argument quality and motivation for use. It was verified that the users who intervene considerably, are affected by the argument quality, which is information’s objective quality. Meanwhile, it was verified that the social media’s intervention did not have mediating effect when it comes to the relationship between the trust towards information source and motivation for use. Lastly, this study shows the social media’s importance in the tourism industry. On top of that, this study implies the need to perceive use and sharing of tourism information as an important tool for tourism marketing. Social media is the online network media that is based on the exchange of information among users. Likewise, it is necessary to provide user centered services through interactive communication in order to understand tourism consumers. Accordingly, we are now facing the challenges of attracting long-term customers and developing the tourism market by understanding the desires and decision-making behaviors of the social media users.
