In this work, the effect of photoactive layer’s thickness on organic solar cell made from P3HT as an electron donor material and from PCBM or ICBA as an acceptor material was studied. The active layer’s thickness is controlled by adjusting the concentration of the blended donor/acceptor solution and rotation speed of spin coating process. The structure of the studied organic solar cells is Glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/Active layer/LiF/Al. The current-voltage measurement of as-fabricated devices with a light irradiation was carried out and the device performance was compared and analyzed by means of typical solar cell parameters. Thickness of active layer affects internal morphology being confirmed by UV-Visible absorption spectra estimated with an UV-Visible spectrometer. Moreover, the external quantum efficiency was used to clarify the correlation between the absorption spectra and device performances. Absorption of thin films increases linearly with the increase of active later thickness while the External Quantum Efficiency(EQE) as well as device’s current density does not increase linearly with the thickness of active layer. This could be explained by the optical effect, e.g. reflection and interference caused by the layer-by-layer structure of the device. In this study, a series of organic solar cells with various thickness values were prepared and characterized optically and electronically for understanding of internal effect on the device performance upon varying of active layer thickness in order to optimize the optical property of organic solar cell and contribute for higher power generation efficiency of devices.
