In contemporary society, spas are emerging as one of the alternative healing spaces. At present, hot springs and public baths are growing into a new integrated healing space in combination with the recent spa culture in each area. In such a complex and diversified society, contemporary people want a healing space based on various programs. Integrated healing programs are applied to contemporary spas in order to satisfy visitors' various demands. This study aims to investigate how healing elements in the contemporary spa play a therapeutic role in the healing space and how the space is designed. Particularly, this study subdivided healing elements into 3 kinds, natural healing, sensuous healing and mediative healing, based on previous researches on healing and spas. Out of them, this study focused on sensuous healing as a research subject, and investigated the integrated relation between light and senses. To the contemporary spa, therapy programs using humans' five senses are mostly applied, and the spa space and sensuous healing are factors that cannot be separable from each other. The arrangement and composition of different spaces and the circulation along them can be regarded as a basic frame for visitors to have sensuous experiences in the contemporary spa. Through this basic frame, this study drew healing space implementation methods of the contemporary spa design into 4 kinds of healing light and sense experience. These 4 kinds of healing light and sense are based on different characteristics as follows; The first is healing light through natural light, the second is healing light through the contrast between light and shade, the third is healing light through the transparency of physical properties, and the fourth is a sensuous experience using the physical properties of materials. In Chapter Ⅳ, this study analyzed a total of 6 spa cases based on the 4 elements of light and sense. This study made a plan for a spa project focusing on light and senses, based on the characteristics of a theoretical research and analyzing cases. The study selected a hotel spa, belonging to the urban-style spa, for the project. The project was conducted mostly to overcome the limitations of a hotel spa located in the inner space and investigate how light and senses are expressed in the spa space as a healing space. By comparting the spa space to stimulate visitors' senses, this study attempted to maximize the effect of different therapies, such as light therapy and sound therapy. Besides, the study connected the spa space to the locational features of the hotel by independently arranging the spa space outside the hotel. The project attempted to provide visitors with more chances to expose to nature. It is judged that the results of this study will be helpful in suggesting a direction for the implementation of integrated healing elements in the contemporary spa.
