Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world, and Portland cement is a core element in most concretes. During the manufacture of the Portland cement, a great amount of CO2 is emitted. In fact, the emission accounts for approximately 5% of total CO2 emissions produced by humans. To properly respond to climate changes caused by these greenhouse gas emissions, therefore, cement-concrete industry needs to reduce CO2 emissions as well as to achieve quantitative growth. To achieve stable performances, this study used the powder alkaline sodium sulfate anhydrous (Na2SO4) as an activator and Light-Burnt Dolomite (LBD), one of the economical lime materials, in the Alkali-Activated Portland blast-furnace Slag Cement (AAPSC) which consisted of ordinary portland cement (OPC, 10-20%) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS, 80-90%). Then, the effects of these materials on the hydration and strength of the cement were analyzed. In addition, a concrete specimen has been made, and its characteristics have been analyzed. According to analysis on the hydration characteristics of the AAPSC, in addition, when sodium sulfate was only used as an activator, early hydration was accelerated, and setting time was decreased. Furthermore, improvement of strength was observed in early age only. When the LBD and sodium sulfate were used at the same time, however, it was able to improve strength up to the level of 28-day compressive strength as well as 3-day strength. The cementitious material content and unit water content were 375 ㎏/㎥ and 182 ㎏/㎥ respectively. According to a concrete test on the AAPSC, when sodium sulfate was only used as an activator, slump loss increased, and strength improved in the early stage only. When the LBD was mixed, however, sodium sulfate-caused slump loss was decreased. In addition, it has made a continued contribution to the improvement of concrete strength even in 28 days as well as during the early stage. When the LBD and sodium sulfate were used at the same time, furthermore, carbonation resistance improved, and shrinkage decreased. As described above, when sodium sulfate and the LBD were properly used, it was able to keep the concrete's compressive strength by using the GGBS (approximately 80%) instead of cement and reduce slump loss and shrinkage. In addition, it was able to improve carbonation resistance. Moreover, it appears that it would be necessary to further promote the use of the alkali-activated slag concrete in cement-concrete industry in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the use of the blast-furnace slag. For this, there will be further studies by research purpose and field, and this study will be available for this kind of attempt.
