Prediction of human movement has been a significant issue. The main applications are interface between human and robot, and rehabilitation of the elderly or disabled. The most common feature is surface electromyography (sEMG) which is electrical potential when muscles contract. However, sEMG is easy to be affected by arm posture, electrode location and muscle fatigue. Moreover, signal processing for sEMG is complicated that it works against inexperienced users. Some features have introduced as an alternative of sEMG. They measure physical or mechanical properties change of the human body. Robustness of sensor is important issues. However, reference point of the sensor also varies due to swelling of the muscles or arm posture. The factors lower the performance of classifier. In this thesis, two methods are proposed to minimize the effect of the factors. The first one removes residual muscle volume change (RMVC) when hand posture is relaxed posture by employing a single sEMG channel on the FDS muscle. And the second one considers the effect of arm posture by measuring an orientation of the arm using two inertial measurement units (IMU). The performance was validated by performing classification of 3 hand postures and quantified by the match rate between motion cues and classification results. The first one improves the performance by 4.45% (k-NN classifier). For grasp force classification, it improves the performance by 10.32% (k-NN classifier, quantified with the integral of squared errors (ISE)). And the second one is validated by performing two hand postures classification. The second one improves the performance up by 5% (quantified by match rate).
