Globally increasing concern about biological resources. Microalgae is a useful organism, used in biodiesel, fish and shellfish live food, carbon dioxide fixation, cosmetics and health food. The purpose of this study to understand growth characteristics of microalgaes under different light sources for industrial use. Five species of microalgaes were selected from industrially used species. Light sources were Red LED(660 nm), Blue LED(465 nm) and fluorescent light with the light intensity of 50, 100, 200, 350 µ㏖·m-2·s-1. As a result, Botryococcus braunii showed no difference between light sources, Nannochloropsis sp. showed growth characteristics by light sources and intensity, but growth rate of was similar in maximum growth environment. Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Chlorella vulgaris showed clear growth characteristics and growth rate was best in Red LED lamp, 100 µ㏖·m-2·s-1. Isochrysis galbana showed growth characteristics by light intensity but, every light source's growth rate were similar in 100 µ㏖·m-2·s-1. Therefore, It was not efficient to use LED light source to B. braunii, Nannochloropsis sp. and I. galbana, because of no difference growth characteristics among each light sources. But, P. tricornutum and C. vulgaris were efficient to use Red LED light source and 100 µ㏖·m-2·s-1 light intensity, because of growth rate was superior than other light sources. This study will be used as the basic data for selection of the light source in closed culture system.
