A Study on the Influence of the Speech Rate to Word Recognition Score of Patients with Presbycusis Using Hearing Aids원문보기

This study investigated the influence of the speech rate on the word recognition score targeting seniors using hearing aids. Total 13 seniors in their ages over 60 years old having the sensory neural hearing loss were participated in this study. The word recognition test was conducted using meaningless words, while the speech rate was controlled by placing pauses between the words. The intervals between the pauses were set differently as 250ms (standard,) 500ms (slow), and 1,000ms (very slow). The loudness was set to the most comfortable loudness level(MCL) as perceived by the subjects who were wearing hearing aids. Then, the subjects were required to listen to the dictated words and repeat them loudly. As the results of this study, it was found that as the speech rate was faster, the seniors' word recognition scores were decreased, and this tendency was constantly appeared even though they wore hearing aids. It suggests that the use of hearing aid is useful in improving the aided hearing by compensating the seniors' hearing loss, but can't improve the seniors' slowed auditory processing speed. Especially, the fact that in all words speeching speeds, as the older one was, his/her word recognition scores were more decreased supports this suggestion. Therefore, it is expected that the use of hearing aids can generate some positive auditory rehabilitation effects such as preventing the auditory nerves's regression and improving the word recognition score.
