Development of Cultivation Techniques for Productivity Improvement of High Quality Indigo Crop, Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross원문보기

Persicaria tinctoria H. Gross as an annual Indigo crop plant belonging to Polygonaceae, has been used for producing a natural colorant, the blue dye indigo, which is used for textile dyeing in Korea since ancient times. This study was conducted to understand proper cultivation methods for improving the productivity of high quality indigo plants, using two cultivars, Naju Local and new cultivar Naram Blue. Fresh leaf yield was maximum at earliest transplanting (May 30) when time was delayed, and then decreased. While Niram (blue dye extract) and indigo content of fresh leaf remained almost constant in spite of having a small variation. When harvest time was delayed, plant height, number of first branches, and fresh leaf yield was increased, while Niram content was found maximum on 20th of August, and then slightly decreased. Similarly, indigo level was found maximum on 5th of August, and then continuously decreased, with more delayed harvest. In an experiment of harvest frequencies, leaf yield and Niram content was higher in the twice harvest than those in once harvest; however, there is no great difference in indigo yield in different harvest frequencies. As planting density was more dense, leaf yield was higher, though there was no significant difference among planting densities in their colorant level. Therefore, Niram or indigo production per unit area was supposed to be enhanced by dense planting.
The results suggest that transplanting early before May 30, harvesting early in August, planting as densely as possible, and twice harvesting including an early August in the southern area of Korea could be proper cultivation practices to improve the leaf yield and colorant level of indigo crop.
