This study has examined the changes in water quality in the areas starting from a spot located in Usan-dong, Gwangsan-gu in Gwangju, which is the mainstream flowing into Seungchon stank, to a total of 8 spots of feeders including Gwangju Stream, Pyeongdong Stream, and Hwanglyong River. After that, the water quality status was examined to identify the impact of stanks installed through a river revival project on the Yeongsan River's upstream; the stanks were installed from Gwangju Stream, where the mainstream and sewage treatment plant of Gwangju in the upstream area are located, to Seungchon stank. Next, a comparative analysis of physical and chemical factors was done. As for changes in the water quality of Yeongsan River's upstream area, the hydraulic retention time increased thanks to the stank installation. However, there were practically no changes in the overall standard value of living conditions of the stream. Although the water quality of Gwangju area was decent thanks to the management system aimed at improving the water quality, the influx of non-point pollutant sources caused by farmlands and channel maintenance flows of the stream were insufficient during March and April, a dry season; it led to eutrophication problem. In addition, the treated waste water of Gwangju accounted for 67% of Yeoungsan River's flow rate, discharging lots of nutrient salts. Therefore, new measures with stronger standards on the discharge should be enforced. Even though the stream water can be maintained following the stank installation, the structural vulnerabilities of Yeoungsan River, such as a rise in hydraulic retention time and water temperature, and excessive influx of non-point pollutant sources, have caused massive generation of algae. Such massive generation of algae and rising algae growth have led to frequent damages. Therefore, there is an urgent need to eliminate algae and enforce measures based on long-term, additional research. Although the water quality of upstream has been steadily improved thanks to the stanks, the quality should be improved more through self-purification by adding ecological space, as well as hydrophilic space.
