For the purpose of application of tannin dyestuff in horse chestnut, firstly by the preparation of boiling water extract of shell of horse chestnut, and through probing of dyeing temperature, dyeing time, pH effect of dyeing solution, concentration of neutral salt, treatment of cationic agent and dyeing property of hemp cloth, the following results were obtained.
1. The maximum absorption peak of extract obtained at ultraviolet visible spectrometer appeared as 273.5nm, and as the value shows the same characteristics with the absorption peak of persimmon tannin, therefore it is assumed to be a condensed tannin similar to persimmon tannin.
2. Although it has good dyeing characteristic even at 40℃, but the increment of dyeing volume with the increasing of dyeing time and temperature is too small, so the dependence of dyeing volume on dyeing temperature and dyeing time was low.
3. At pH 2, it showed the highest dyeing volume, and with the increment of pH value the dyeing volume was decreased more.
4. With the application of neutral salt, the dyeing volume was increased, and 30g/l at pH 6.5 & 10g/l at pH3.0 it showed best results. With the dyeing of temperature dropping method, the dyeing volume could be increased a little.
5. With the treatment of cationic agent, the dyeing volume was increased more, and it was effective with the concentration of 3% at pH 6.5 and 1% at pH 3.0.
6. It showed the second class in non-mordant and mordant at color fastness to light, and the third class in copperish mordant, so the improved result of color fastness to light was obtained.
