UVB

The purpose of this study was to examine Korean women's minimum erythema dose(MED) and changes in skin color index, which could be utilized to test sunblock effect and whitening effect. The subjects were 14 healthy women who were in their early and mid-20s. The selected women showed no photo-sensitive reaction and had no skin diseases. After UVB was irradiated to the external part of the women's upper arms in four different stages(50, 75, 100 and 125mJ/㎠), their skin was observed with the naked eye 24 hours later and then for eight weeks, once a week. Their erythema index, melanin index, lightness, redness and yellowness were tested and compared to see whether there would be any changes in their skin color indexes. Besides, a survey was conducted on the women to classify their skin type according to Fitzpatrick's classification of skin types. As a result, the skin of the three women belonged to skin type II; seven to skin type III; and four to skin type Ⅳ. But there were differences in MED and the degree of skin darkness even among the women who were found with the naked eye to have the same type of skin. Their erythema index and redness, which were two of the skin color indexes, were highest 24 hours after the irradiation of UVB. On the contrary. their melanin index, lightness and yellowness were lowest 24 hours after that. The erythema index continued to drop steadily between one week and eight weeks after the irradiation of UVB, and there was a tendency that the other skin color indexes rosed and then dropped or dropped, rose and then dropped again during the period of observation. When the higher amount of UVB was irradiated, erythema index and redness became higher, and melanin index, lightness and yellowness became lower. Before UVB irradiation, erythema index had a significant correlation with melanin index, lightness, redness and yellowness, and melanin index was correlated to lightness. Lightness had a significant correlation to redness. Erythema index had a significant correlation with lightness and redness 24 hours after UVB irradiation, and there was a significant correlation between melanin and redness and between lightness and redness at that point of time. There was a very week correlation between erythema index and melanin index and between melanin index and lightness one week and two weeks after UVB irradiation, and every index was correlated with one another eight weeks after that. When erythema was generated, redness accounted for a larger portion of lightness than yellowness. As a result of piecing together the results of observation by the naked eye and all the indexes, it could be said that when the sunblock effect of sunscreen products on Korean women is tested, the amount of UVB should be between 50mJ/㎠ and 75mJ/㎠, and that it should be regulated within the range depending on their skin type. In terms of whitening effect test, the amount of UVB that generated erythema and made skin color dark was between 75mJ/㎠ and 100mJ/㎠. The observation period of whitening effect should range from a low of six weeks. Accordingly, the measurement of the skin color indexes seems to be more effective than Fitzpatrick's classification of skin types in producing more objective and quantitative results when sunblock effect and whitening effect are tested. The findings of the study are expected to provide useful information on MED and observation period by Korean skin type for sunblock effect test and whitening effect test.
