The Chinese culture is rooted on one of the oldest histories in the world. Its diversity is rich and deep. Despite the chaotic transitions of many empires the cultural identity has been saved. One backbone to sustain the cultural uniformity is Confucianism. Confucius has invented the Confucian ideas that have been one of the dominant frameworks used as a means to rule by the country and her neighboring countries including Korea and Japan. The Confucian idealism once was thought to disappear after Qin dynasty. At the early Han dynasty after the fall of Qin dynasty, the Confucian idea is nothing but a school of ideas out of numerous institutes as it is even less influential than hwangrohak school. The minor school of ideas has become the national code of idealism in Han dynasty and its surrounding regions to the East. This paper is to formulate a rationale to explain the success of the Confucian idealism. Han dynasty is considered to be the first unified empire in China with solid social and cultural structures. The dynasty gave birth to the foundation of China over the next 2000 years to come and built a gateway to an original Chinese ideas and cultures. In particular the ruling period by emperor Mu is important in that it established the Confucian ideas as a fundamental philosophy of the empire. Dongjungseo has played the major role in the development of Confucian ideas as a national principles by reinterpreting and formulating the ideas. After a series of wars following the downfall of Qin dynasty, the Han dynasty was in need of new political and social rules to unify the continent. A new idea based on Taoism appeared that proposed a principle of "Inaction"(not doing more than necessary) probably with an intention to let people have some rest who were exhausted from many wars and exploited labors. At an early period, policies based on hwangrohak were executed with a goal not to get involved into people's life affairs. Even some scholars of Confucian school adopted Daoism into their theories. Early emperors of Han dynasty tried to solve the chaotic social problems in vain. At B.C 141 emperor Mu began his ruling when the political environment required a new principle. As the power became centralized in the 무's ruling period there arose a need for a uniform system of mental principles over the nation. After the notion so called "Tired of Mungyeong" the emperor Mu tried to unify ideas or mental principles while he achieved an economical stability followed by the political unification. He asked scholars to develop ideological theories to support political unification so to sustain the centralized ruling permanently. Upon the call for new theory, Dongjungseo submitted a proposal "cheoninsam“ and that became the beginning of the age of Confucian idealism by devaluating "Noble theory". He provided the nation with a unified framework of Confucian ideas extended with Yin-Yang theory, and this influenced later scholars greatly. The ideas of Dongjungseo was influenced by "jejabaega:hundred schools of thought" such as whagrohak and Daoism that had been popular during the warring states period. Nonetheless the characteristics of Dongjungseo ideas are about Confucian ideas. The difference between his Confucian ideas and Confucius own theories is Yin-Yang theory that lays foundation of Dongjungseo's ideas. The Yin-Yang theory, Confucian ideas, and “yangjo- eumbi” ideas that underline Far Eastern nations came from Dongjungseo's theories. The Yin-Yang theory described the order of circulatory universe and natural transitions as is understood by the Chinese ancestors. The theory is an explanation over the world, is an wisdom to make decisions on, and a religious system to believe in. The theory is a generalized value system over the world and life for the people at the time. The idea that the elements consisting of the universe are all co-related has led to the theory of Yin-Yang. Each element cannot be without a relation to other elements. The theory of Yin-Yang was a result of numerous work over a lengthy period of time. The theory had gone through many changes and verifications. It also influenced meteorology, astrology, and history study. Dongjungseo formulated the rules of social morals and politics based on Yin-Yang theory. He started with Yin-Yang theory and completed his philosophy by adding "Celestial union theory” and "Disaster theory". His representative work of Confucian theory is known as "Sky Men Relational theory". PoongWooRan quoted "Sky Men Relational theory" is pivotal in Dongjungseo's philosophy." "Sky Men Relational theory" is based Yin-Yang theory. In his "Sky Men Relational theory", he explains sky (nature) and combines it with human (politics, society), which led to the development of Confucian ideas as the foundation of the unified empire. Dongjungseo also gave a theoretical framework to the concept of "King’s Dignity from Heaven" by his arguments "Sky" and "Great Unification" that reinterpret "Spring Fall" by Confucius. On contrary, "Disaster theory" was used to limit the power of kings. Dongjungseo's theory was centered in Yang and as a result it led to some contradictions in Yin-Yang framework. With all these background, Dongjungseo's theory was developed rather differently from “Old Confucian theories". This dissertation has investigated the role of Dongjungseo in the development of Confucian ideas in the Mu's ruling period of Han dynasty. The paper also argues on how Yin-Yang theory was fused with Confucian ideas and the characteristics of Dongjungseo's Confucian theories contributed to the Confucian ideology. It is also found that as the Confucian theories based on Yin-Yang was becoming the national philosophy, the theories "Disaster theory" and "yangjoneumbi" by Dongjungseo raised certain limitations or contradictions within the unified framework. The paper also draws observations on the significance of Dongjungseo's Yin-Yang theory in the context of his influence to the later scholars and the Chinese culture as a whole. In conclusion, Dongjungseo developed a Confucian theory suited for a new unified world "Han dynasty" by adopting Yin-Yang theory as the basis of various Confucian theories driven by Confucius, Mencius, and Xuncius.
