Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the perception and attitude of school nutritionists and school nurses at elementary schools on oral health related nutrition policies. It aims at proposing a direction for nutrition policies to improve oral health of children based on the results of this study. Methods: Subjects for this study are 1,051 elementary school nutritionists, nutrition teachers and school nurses in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Jeolla provinces. Individual self-administered surveys were examined for the subjects of the study selected by the convenience sampling method. The contents of the research were the socio-demographic features of the research subjects and their perceptions and attitudes towards oral health and related nutrition policies. The proposed nutrition policies were carbonated beverage consumer tax policies, sugar consumer tax policies, sugar content marking policies, sugar types marking policies, dental caries risk level marking policies, non-dental caries food tax cut policies, traffic light marking policies for food that cause dental caries, policies that apply dental caries induction indices on recommended sugar consumption, policies on adding national health improvement taxes on foods that cause dental caries, policies to limit advertising times for food that cause dental caries, policies to restrict sales of food that cause dental caries in food safety protection zones, toothfriendly sweets marking policies, and policies for recommending use alternative sweeteners in school meals for a total of 13 policies. In addition, the amount of use of sugary foods by nutritionists and nutrition teachers, level of reflecting student dental examination results on menus, and perception on oral health nutrition education were examined. Results: Sugar content marking policies showed the highest approval rate among the oral health related nutrition policies, while policies for adding taxes to sugary food were the lowest. Factors that had impact on oral health related nutrition policies were age, work place, work experience, employment type and work category. The older the age, working in eub/myeon areas, more work experience, full-time compared to non-full time, and nutritionists compared to school nurses showed more positive perception and attitudes towards nutrition policies. 56.5% of nutritionists and nutrition teachers answered that they gave sugary snacks 1-2 times per week in elementary school meals, while 78.29% answered that sugar was used in large amounts in the snacks. Furthermore, 20.5% answered that they had received dental examination results of students. In the perception and attitude towards oral health related nutrition policies of nutritionists and nutrition teachers, it was found that perception on use of sugary foods and oral health nutrition education had a bigger effect than the socio-demographic features. The more the work experience, the less sugary snacks given by the nutritionist, the less sugary snacks given in meals, the more frequent the sugar content is checked when purchasing ingredients for meals, the less sugar used in meals, the more oral health nutrition education is perceived to be necessary, currently carrying out oral health nutrition education, and not having experience completing oral health nutrition education resulted in positive perceptions for oral health related nutrition policies. Conclusions: Nutrition policies to improve oral health are needed and a legal system that can support this is necessary.
