In high field MRI, it is important to develop high performance RF coils with quantitative evaluation. There are two ways to evaluate RF coils for MRI. One is the B1 mapping of RF coils and the other is the evaluation of the coil sensitivity map, SNR map and g-factor map as compared to the FDTD simulation data. In this paper, performance evaluation of the new B1 mapping method, named interleaved-three-flip angle (ITFA), and new RF coil modeling method with a 3D scanner for FDTD simulation have been studied. There are two popular B1 mapping methods, named the double angle method (DAM) and the actual flip angle imaging (AFI). DAM has no T1 effects, but it takes long scan time. AFI has gained wide polularity because of its fast scan capability, but it suffers from T1-dependent errors in B1 computation. To overcome the disadvantages of the two methods, a new B1 mapping method, named interleaved-three-flip angle (ITFA) method, has been suggested. To evaluate the performacne of ITFA, we made a human-brain-mimicking phantom that had six compartments with different T1 and T2. We performed B1 mapping experiments at 3T on the phantom and a volunteer using ITFA, AFI and DAM, and then, we compared the B1 mapping results. We observed that ITFA outperformed AFI and DAM. In high field MRI, we use receive array coils to get high SNR and to reduce the scan time by parallel imaging technique. Array coils consist of many loop coils that may have electromagnetic coupling to each other. To consider the coupling effect of receive array coils, exact RF coil modeling is important for FDTD simulations. In general, we do coil modeling directly using a 3D modeling tool, so it takes long and it often has big modeling errors. Using a pencil-type 3D scanner, we measured 3D positions of the multiple feature points on the coil and we made a 3D CAD model of the coil by protruding the coil wires between the measuring points. We transferred the 3D CAD model to the FDTD solver for EM simulation. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method, we made 3D coil models of a shoulder coil and 36-channel helmet-style array coil. After the coil modeling, we obtained B1 field map of the coils using the FDTD solver. We demonstrated that the coil modeling using a pencil-type 3D scanner can reduce the modeling time and improve the accuracy of coil modeling.
