The effects of Good lighting extend much further to offer visual performance, spaciousness, health and well-being to occupants in the space. However, not all occupants are satisfied by the environmental standards set by provided indoor lighting conditions. The lighting environment is required to understand the features of physical luminous elements for maximum visual performance. The lighting environment realized by artificial lighting influence occupants’ behavior through recognition and visual perception. In particular, some activities within the living room may require very different lighting conditions as well as different usage of light patterns as residential applications are quite personal and may involve more than a single individual. Therefore, the physical luminous elements are applied for the purposes of improving the residents’ visual performance in regards to the type of space occupied and the tasks that are carried out. The difference in culture and environment plays a role in the residents’ lighting preference in the living room. This study is to evaluate visual performance of occupants according to physical luminous elements and suggest the range of visual comfort as they choose lighting conditions suitable for their activities. In the present study, LED lighting was installed in a mock-up space (6.2m x 4.5m x 2.5m) considered to be a living room. 30 participants were exposed to 9 different physical environments controlled by three levels of illuminance, 30lx, 100lx and 150lx, and three levels of correlated color temperature, 2700K, 4000K and 6500K. The main purpose was to evaluate visual comfort, visual task performance and lighting control on occupants’ behavior. Generally, visual comfort of participants in the living room was more affected by illuminance than CCT. The results showed that 150lx received the most positive responses among the other illuminance levels considered except for the ‘Comfortable- Uncomfortable’ criteria where by the preferred levels of illuminance and color temperatu re were 30lx and 2700K respectively. However, the lighting conditions did not affect visual task performance as there is no statistical difference except for the ‘reading and writing’ tasks. Finally, subjective experiment to select appropriate lighting condition for each activity was carried out. 150lx and 4000K were selected for tasks involving object recognition in the living room, 150lx and 5400K were chosen for visual task and 30lx and 2700K proved to be suitable for relaxation purposes. The participants assessed the most important factors for their visual comfort on each of the activity based on ‘Comfortable-Uncomfortable’ and ‘Pleasant-Unpleasant’ criteria. In the further study, the range of over 150lx should be considered to suggest the appropriate range of visual comfort and task performance on occupants’ behavior. In addition, the wide range of participants should be extended as the living room is a communal space and the residents’ age may vary significantly and hence leading to huge differences in their lighting needs for visual activities.
