As the modern society started the industrialization, chemical dyes were invented, which caused reduction in use of natural dyeing. However, it can be found that the natural dyeing has recently begun to regain interest. Because, compared to chemical dyeing, it is more eco-friendly and has a wide application to health products to dye with roots of plants, bark, flowers, fruits, soil and so on, it is attracting the global attention. Especially it gives everyone the benefit of dyeing with ease if they can get materials directly from nature. In addition, the dyes extracted from the natural materials can be used in dying not only fabrics but also food. Because many consumers have much interest in health-promoting food, gardenia yellow extracted from gardenia is not only used for food coloring but also in Chinese herb medicines with various components of gardenia for anti-inflammation, sedation, fever-lowering, bleeding, etc. Many natural colors are superior in safety and have the effect of physiological activity, and lately, studies for the mass production have been conducted and beginning to prove the usefulness as additives in health food. In the case of dyeing with colors of gardenia, yellow, blue and red can be obtained and the yellow is most well-known as a dyeing material. It is the most noteworthy that gardenia dyeing makes it possible to achieve high color fastness without mordants. Also the comparison and analysis on the color differences between many different fabrics cannot be ignored. In natural dyeing, it is the first prior task to solve the problems involving color fastness. The natural dyeing has the benefits of eco-friendliness and health promotion, but the light fastness and the washing fastness are important, which represent the degrees of dyed goods' durability and resistibility against external conditions. Also it is significant to choose the right mordant for the properties of fibers. The mordanting is the process of the fixation of dyeing solution, has an effect on color difference and plays an important role in increasing color fastness. There may be the right mordants for the 4 kinds of fibers, and the difference in color fastness can be found with the mordants. These mordants increase the color fastness, help accelerate the dye absorption, make colors more vivid and sometimes create a specific color. For this study on gardenia, the gardenia produced in Sangju in 2011 is used. The amount of domestic gardenia being farmed is so little that one can hardly get a hold of it. For this reason, in order to more advertise dyeing with domestic gardenia, the study on the color difference values and color fastness are carried out and the following conclusions are drawn. 1. As a result of dyeing with gardenia, the 1st extraction solution has the highest K/S value and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th solutions show the lower dye uptakes in the order. 2. For the same extraction solution, it is found that the dye uptakes follow the order of raw-silk, silk, rayon and cotton. 3. Under the same conditions, Fe is the 1st, Alum is the 2nd, Al is the 3rd and Cu is the 4th in the superiority as a result of mordanting with mordant after gardenia dyeing. 4. In light fastness, it is shown that the raw-silk has the highest reaction, and cotton has the lowest value. The fabrics without mordant treatment are found to be similar to those with the treatment in the color fastness. 5. In friction fastness, the difference of reaction is remarkably noticeable between drying and wetting. In the case of wetting, the values of color fastness differ very much depending on the kinds of fabrics. Especially, with no mordant treatment, the values are observed to decrease very sharply in the case of wetting.
