The Effects of Emotional Clarity and Contertransference Behavior on Working Alliance Based on the Level of Counselor Experience원문보기

This study was to examine the relationships between emotional clarity and contertransference behavior and working alliance that counselors and clients perceive. For this study, sets of questionnaires were given to 57 pairs of counselors and clients from Youth Support Center, Healthy Family Support Center, University Counseling Center and other private counseling centers in Seoul and Kyungki. The counselor level was divided into the inexperienced, semi-experienced, and experienced counselors. Inexperienced counselors are those who have provided counseling services more than one semester and less than three semesters, continue on graduate-level of education, and have at least level 3 certified counseling-related license. Semi-experienced counselors are those who have counseling experiences more than 4 semesters and less than 9 semesters, have Master’s Degree, and are qualified with a level 2 certified counseling-related license. Experienced counselors should have more than 10-semester counseling experiences, have Master’s Degree and be qualified with a level 1 certified counseling-related license(Jo, Kwon, 2011). Clients who are subjects of this study were restricted to high school graduates(over 18 year-old), with experiences in receiving counseling services for over 5 sessions. The counselors who met the requirements for each level completed questionnaires of emotional clarity, contertransference behavior and working alliance. The clients were asked to complete only those of working alliance. The period of conducting the surveys lasted from February 9, 2013 to November 14, 2013. 70 out of 80 copies were collected, 13 out of 70 copies, which fell short for the purpose of this study, were excluded, and the last remaining 57 copies were analyzed. To summarize the results of the study, emotional clarity had a negative relationship with contertransference behavior, and a positive relationship with working alliance. That is, it implies that the less counselors show contertransference behavior and perceive emotional clarity in a clear sense, the better counselors’ working alliance is likely to be. Negative contertransference behavior and all contertransference behaviors had negative relationships with working alliances of both counselors and clients. This means that the more contertransference behavior is shown, the less effective working alliances of counselors and clients become. In addition, working alliance of counselors and that of clients were positively related, which means that the higher the level of counselors’ working alliance, the higher the level of clients’s working alliance as well. Second, there was a significant difference between inexperienced and experienced counselor groups in the relationship between countertransference behavior and each of the two subtypes of counselors’ working alliance, which are emotional bond and goal agreement. However, there was no significant difference between emotional clarity based on the level of counselor experience and clients’ working alliance. In addition, there was no significant difference between countertransference behavior and task agreement, the subtype of counselors’ working alliance based on the level of counselor experience. Third, emotional clarity of inexperienced counselors had a positive effect on working alliances that both counselors and clients perceive. Moreover, a low level of countertransference behavior of semi-counselors had a positive effect on counselors’ working alliance. This study investigated the relationships between counselors‘ personal variable and working alliances of counselors and clients. Additionally, it is emphasized that it is important for counselors to identify effects of emotional clarity and countertransference behavior based on the level of counselor experiences, when forming working alliance with clients. In conclusion, important aspects for formation of relationship with clients and necessity of education depending on counselor experiences were discussed.
