The purpose of this study is to biomechanically analyze the 540°Dwihuryeochgi, the typical technique for taekwondo demonstration of Gyeokpa (smashing pine boards or roof tiles) and the basis of the advanced spin kick in order to provide the standard for safe and efficient training. To fulfill this purpose, the 540°Dwihuryeochgi motion was biomechanically analyzed with the members of taekwondo demonstration team and the 3-dimensional motion analysis system and force platform and the following results were obtained. To perform 540°Dwihuryeochgi, the members of the taekwondo demonstration team appeared to increase the airborne time by reducing the time the foot rolls on the ground in the load bearing section of the motion and greatly increasing vertical impact during the jump and use the counteraction of the lower limbs including the ankle joints. Moreover, the taekwondo demonstrators used the strategy of turning the speed the center of mess forward into the vertical direction using appropriate angle of attack and flexed the hip joint and knee joint of the kicking leg in order to perform the kicking motion near the point where the centroid of body reaches the highest point rather than reducing the moment of inertia in the airborne section. In the kicking part, the demonstrators used flexion as the mechanism to prevent the hyperextension of knee joint in order to kick. Also, the demonstrators showed the pattern of motion to transfer the momentum to the kicking leg using the alternating spin of the torso to perform 540°Dwihuryeochgi as they do in other spin kicks such as Dwihuryeochagi and Dolgaechagi. 540°Dwihuryeochgi was considered as one of the most difficult kicks in the past, however, is considered as an ordinary technique today as much as it is referred to as the basic kick for various advanced spin kicks due to the advancement of kicking technique. The 540°Dwihuryeochgi evolved mainly through the kicking motion unlike the theoretical estimation that it would evolve by reducing moment of inertia to increase spinning speed. However, it would still need the motion that can effectively reduce the moment of inertia and also facilitates the kicking motion in order to perform the kick with higher number of rotations, and the strategy for such a kick could be achieved through the study of 720° spin kick or 900° spin kick. Furthermore, the potential of error cannot be excluded in the estimation of the center of mass using existing methods particularly for the complicated airborne motion according to this study and preceding studies. Therefore, it is necessary to take preliminary measurements precisely and define joints and segments alongside a study which applies parameters appropriate for the characteristics of each person.
