Frédéric François Chopin(1810-1849), a representative musician of the first half of the 19th century, is the Polish distinctive pianist and composer. He is a man who has an unique position in today's piano music literature by pulling the possibility of the expression of piano toward the peak with a great passion all through his life. At the time when Chopin acted as a musician, a new genre called ‘character piece’ for piano turned up and came into vogue. He largely contributed by including a new concept and content into this character piece to develop it as a representative genre of romanticism by greatly raising its artistic level. He composed various character pieces. Among them, his ballad was created as the first ballad for piano, which later on became the first instrumental ballad. This thesis intended to study on Chopin's ballads. Therefore, at first arranged the relation between romanticism and character piece, and the development process of character piece, subsequently, investigated the term, the ballad, to its origin, as well as its nature, character. In the part where the study of Chopin's ballad was done, It is analyzed by focusing on how Chopin composed this melody musically, also, how and which character he gave. The results of the research can be summarized as follows. The Ballad was a genre which had been prevalent for a long time in literary genre and vocal music genre until Chopin composed it as a piano character piece. It began to be used originaly as dance-song in the Middle Ages and was developed as narrative poet and dramatic song which had a fixed poetry form by French poets-musicians until the 15th century. Later, the ballad, which passed stagnant period, began to took-off together with Lied of romanticism in the 19th century, and was reformed as a genre for piano by Chopin. Chopin's Four ballads stand on the compositional style with traditional organization. The First and Fourth Ballades are based on modified sonata form, and the Second and Third Ballads are based on the balanced structure, i.e. respectively A-B-A′-B′ and A-B-C-B′-A′. All of Chopin's Ballads, two contrasty themes were used thematic process using, repetition, transformation and highlights the whole work organically. Chopin's ballads for piano has a significant meaning in the context of music history in view of the fact that he put a foundation in the development of next generation's instrumental ballad. At the same time, in viewpoint of music aesthetics, he shows a very originative feature by excellently expressing various character of ballad in organized but extended formal design.
