This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of somatosensory training including task-oriented motor exercise on the sensory recovery of hand in stroke patients with somatosensory hand dysfunction. The subjects of this study were 20 stroke patients, and divided randomly into the study group(n=10) and the control group (n=10) by research intervention method. The study group were treated by somatosensory training with sensory and motor function training during total of 6 weeks, 5 times a day for 30 minutes, while the control group received conventional physical therapy during the same period. The sensory and motor functions of the two training groups before and after training were evaluated. Then, the difference before and after the training of each group, and the difference between two groups after training were analyzed. The results were as follows. 1. The sensory function was significantly improved in the study group(p.05). The change of sensory function between two groups before and after training was more significant in the study group than the control group(p<.05). 2. The FMA score was significantly increased in study group(p<.01), and the score was significantly increased also in the control group(p.05). 3. The K-WMFT functional score was significantly increased in study group(p<.01), and the score was significantly increased also in the control group(p.05). 4. The K-WMFT execution time was significantly decreased in study group(p<.01), and the score was significantly decreased also in the control group(p<.05). The change of K-WMFT execution time between two groups after training than before training was more significantly decreased in study group than control group(p.05). The change of K-WMFT upper extremity muscle strength after training than before training showed no significant difference between two groups(p>.05). 6. The K-WMFT hand muscle strength was significantly increased in both study group and control group after training than before training(p.05). 7. The sensory change showed a strong positive correlation with K-WMFT functional score change(p<.01), and showed a strong negative correlation with change of the execution time change(p<.01), and showed a correlation with FMA(p.05). According to the result of the above, application of somatosensory training on stroke patients with somatosensory damage in hand brings not only the sensory recovery, but also quantitative and qualitative improvements of motor function and muscle strength, and sensory recovery has effects on motor function. In clinical situations, therefore, somatosensory training would be able to provide many therapeutic benefits to stroke patients with motor function impairment of hand due to somatosensory dysfunction.
