The act of practicing one’s faith is a religious conduct inseparable for a believer. Practice is a systematic execution to cultivate the mind and body, with the intent of realizing one’s religious purpose. Most people hope to attain what they desire or receive comfort and stability by practicing their faith. There are countless number of religions and methods of practice. In this study, nae-dan, a major form of practice in Korean and Chinese Taoism, and explore what kind of nae-dan elements the new Korean religion Daesoonjinrihoe has. In this study, the act of practicing and practing the way of tao have been regarded as having the same meaning. In order to better understand the concept of dotong, the purpose of practicing Daesoonjinrihoe, a study on jisangsinseon realization (Daesoon ideology from doju Cheol-jae Cho (1895-1958) and his successor dojeon Han-kyung Park (1917-1996)) and its form of practice is needed. If sangje had opened the possibilities of sinseon realization through cheonjigongsa, doju had summarized sangje’s cheonjigongsa and expressed it in tenets, as well as presenting pragmatic methods for realizing jisangsinseon. Dojeon emphasized the continuous practice of methods presented by doju. In Daesoonjinrihoe’s scripture called jeonkyung, sangje uses many terms related to Taoism such as Taoist fairy, live ever-young, etc. Furthermore, sangje shares tales related to Taoism, such as the farmhand who became sinseon, debaucher who learned Taoist hermit with miraculous powers way, and Yeo-dong bin(呂洞賓) becoming a comb seller to his disciples. As both Taoism and Daesoonjinrihoe pursue the idea of sinseon, the “perfect” human, the purpose of this study is to compare and contrast their practice methods in order to learn how they are similar and different, as well as what makes Daesoonjinrihoe unique. In terms of Daesoonjinrihoe’s practice, this study intends to help understand incantation, a method of practice used to reach the goal of yeongtong and train one’s spirit eternally with sangje via training lower abdomen . Taoism was also examined separately as Chinese and Korean Taoism. Korean Taoism’s practice method is marked by nae-dan’s 1air(氣)[3air(氣)], the essence of human’s internal essence – i.e., the heaven, earth, and human positioned as the top, middle and lower danjeon. In contrast, Chinese Taoism involves both nae-dan and oe-dan, where oe-dan was more prevalent prior to Tang and Song dynasties. Furthermore, Bang joong sul(房中術), a type of man and women social tactics from nae-dan, was also widely practiced, but is found nowhere in Korean Taoism. The goals of Prevention(養生), Doin(導引), Qigong(氣功), Medicine(醫術), a branch of nae-dan and corollary training method, also flourished, but their roles are comparatively less significant in corollary training method for Korean Taoism. Thus, this study focused on Chinese Taoism’s nae-dan and Daesoonjinrihoe’s practice methods in order to seek nae-dan elements. How will people train their mind and body? How people choose to train their mind depends on their purpose of training. Therefore, this study seeks to better understand one’s faith through comparing it with other religion.
