Recently, interests for voltage quality are being increased with various demands of customers by the rapid development of advanced technology and a rise in the standard of living. And, it is actively ongoing to study smart grid which is a next generation power grid. It can improve the energy efficiency by using communication technology to exchange information between utilities and customers in real time and bi-directionally. Thereby, distributed generation such as wind power, solar power and fuel cell system will be continuously increased in the future distribution system, and the network configuration will become more complex. Many power quality problems such as increase in fault current, power factor degradation and unbalanced voltage can be caused. Especially over-voltage and voltage variations generated by reversed power flow around interconnection points of distributed generation are one of the most serious problems. But there hasn't been found a perfect solution for these problems until now. If these problems are not solved, Those would exert a bad influence upon voltage quality of smart grid system. For these reasons, it is important to continuously maintain voltage quality and technical development in the existing distribution system with distributed generation. In early days, voltage of the distribution system is controlled by fixed tap of a pole transformer on the primary feeder and by Line Drop Compensator (LDC) control of Under Load Tap Changer (ULTC) on a main transformer. And these days, there are many cases that are operating with distributed generation like large scale wind farms connected by distribution lines in far distance from distribution class substation. In addition, the introduction of Step Voltage Regulator (SVR) has been on the rise because it is effective at long distance lines and high voltage distribution lines which have a lot of load fluctuations. However, because there are independent operations between ULTC of a main transformer and SVR in high voltage distribution lines, efficiency of SVR could be decreased and tap changing could happen frequently. Furthermore, In case of distribution system connected with distributed generation, this extra source seems like causing load reductions. As a result, the conventional voltage control method is not suitable for the voltage maintenance of the end user. Besides, previously installed SVRs have caused issues due to not consider load density, variable load patterns and distributed generation. For these reasons, this essential study on optimum installation position and new control methods of SVR are absolutely needed. Earlier studies about selecting installation place show that it might happen to increase loss after SVR is installed because primary feeder loss is not considered. To solve these problems, in this paper, we proposed optimum installation place determination of SVR to minimize loss through the Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) algorithm. Also, conventional studies for voltage control method on distribution system with distributed generation can be summarized as following two subjects. First, one is a study for determination of LDC’s parameters that could operate together in cooperation with SVR and ULTC of the main transformer. The other is a study about voltage control systems of central voltage control center by analyzing voltage and current data measured at particular node. The conventional LDC way of SVR is the method using load current which is passing through SVR. But, the conventional LDC method of SVR has limitations to maintain standard voltage in circumstances that base on bi-directional power flow. The voltage control using communication at the central voltage control center needs a lot of information and the control algorithm is so complex. For these reasons, in this paper, we proposed Smart Line Drop Compensation (SLDC) which is simplified by reducing the amount of information from accepting only secondary voltage of a main transformer.
