Offshore wind turbines (OWT) are used worldwide as a clean electric power source, replacing the use of hydrocarbon materials to obtain energy. OWTs are usually subjected to complex loading conditions, specifically on the supporting foundations. The loads imposed on OWTs are typically vertical loads contributed by the weight of the structure and horizontal and moment loads from the wind, waves, and currents. The usual foundation type of OWTs are gravity base foundations, mono-piles, or tripod piles. These foundations usually require complex construction techniques and special ground conditions and have limited access to the offshore environment. For example, the gravity base foundation usually has a massive weight, but it is difficult to resist a high overturning moment. The mono-pile for OWTs requires a large amount of expensive steel and a specialized ship to install the foundation into the seabed. Therefore, a new economical foundation technology is necessary to support OWTs. A potential foundation technology for OWTs is the suction bucket foundation. The bucket foundation is an innovative technology for OWTs, because this foundation can be installed faster and at a significantly cheaper cost (approximately 30%) than other foundations such as gravity bases or mono-piles. The suction bucket foundation is installed using the weight of the foundation and the suction pressure pumping inside water out of the bucket. Water will flow into the bucket through the soil and along the inside skirt of the bucket. The suction pressure confines the soil inside the bucket make the soil move together with the bucket. The suction pressure inside the bucket is developed during loading or accumulated from the cyclic loading during the lifetime of an OWT. This research focuses on the evaluation of undrained bearing capacities and accumulated rotations of single and tripod bucket foundations for OWTs in clay ground. Three-dimensional finite element analyses and 1-g experimental tests were performed. The effect of various loading conditions were investigated, such as pure vertical, horizontal, and moment loads and a combined vertical-horizontal-moment loads. The results of the numerical analyses indicated that the bearing capacities of single and tripod bucket foundations increased with the increase in the embedment depth and decreased with the increase in the non-homogeneity degree of the clay ground. In addition, the bearing capacities of the tripod bucket foundations significantly increased with the increase in bucket spacing, particularly for the horizontal and moment bearing capacities. The 1-g experimental tests were conducted using two different bucket models in kaolin clay. The accumulated rotations of the foundations were investigated at different cyclic horizontal load magnitudes with the number of load cycles of 104. The accumulated rotation increased as both cyclic load magnitudes and number of load cycles increased. Based on the results of this research, design equations were proposed to calculate undrained bearing capacities and accumulated rotations of the bucket foundations for OWTs in clay grounds.
