Figurative celadon(象形靑瓷) is the one that imitated a form in specific object. The period of having begun to fashion the clay into object's form is from the New Stone Age whent mankind had begun to make a bowl by hand. In the New Stone Age, the figurative sculpture was mainly produced that imitated a form of animal. Reaching the 5th∼6th century following this, a figurative pottery was produced that imitated animal, character, or specific object in Gaya and Silla. Most of the figurative potteries were used for the aim of a goblet(酒器) for memorial services or burying(副葬). Even the figurative celadon in the Goryeo Dynasty is the one that imitated object's form, but was changed even the aim of production as a big change was made into ceramic from pottery. The figurative celadon in the Goryeo Dynasty was produced typically with types in incense burner(香 爐), water dropper(硯滴), and liquor ewer(注子). These types are all based on usage in daily life. In addition, the figurative celadon, which boasts the formative aesthetics compared to other celadon, is thought to have had even the objective of appreciation. The purpose of this study is to figure out the aspect peculiar to figurative celadon in Goryeo by examining materials and types of figurative celadon and by comparing it with figurative celadon in China. Thus, it reconsidered the central period by examining the figurative celadon, which was excavated in the newly-discovered relic on the ocean floor, kiln site, and archaeological site. A subject matter was classified into animal, plant, and character. These things are materials available for watching formative aesthetics and sculpting technology in Goryeo along with what embodied a form, thereby well showing characteristics in figurative celadon of Goryeo. A model was divided into Ⅰ, Ⅱ types. Type Ⅰ is a case that the whole of the basic form in celadon imitated a form of object. Water dropper(硯滴) and liquor ewer(注子) belong to type Ⅰ. Type Ⅱ is a case that some of the basic form in celadon imitated a form of object. Incense burner(香爐) is typical type. A material of animal-shaped celadon is classified into the auspicious animals such as giraffe, lion, dragon, ichthyosaur, and Guryong(九龍), and the actual animals such as mandarin duck, duck, monkey, and toad. A model was produced diversely with water dropper(硯滴) and liquor ewer(注子) in type Ⅰ and incense burner(香爐) in Type Ⅱ. Out of this, the typical type in animal-shaped celadon is incense burner(香爐), namely, animal-decorated incense burner(香爐) that animal is decorated on the lid. The diversely animal-ornamentation incense burners were produced in a kiln of Cheongryangsa Yeoyo(淸凉寺汝窯) in Northern Song(北宋) in China, of Gyodanhagwanyo(郊壇下官窯) in Southern Song(南宋), and of Woljuyo(越州 窯) and Yojuyo(耀州窯) in the Song Dynasty. It is similar to the whole icon to animal-ornamentation incense burner in Goryeo. However, difference is shown in composition of incense burner. The detailed expression of animal ornamentation seems to be more consistent with icon in craft, which had been popular and produced in the contemporary age. Accordingly, it is thought to have utilized icon that had been popular in Goryeo even while accepting the influence of China. The plant-shaped celadon in Goryeo suitably harmonized formative aesthetics in function and material of a type. Materials include melon, small gourd, lotus, peach, bamboo shoot, and pomegranate. A model include water dropper(硯滴) and liquor ewer(注子) in type Ⅰ with application of the whole form in a material. The formative aesthetics in the plant-shaped celadon was expressed by realistically depicting, transforming and reconstructing object. In addition, it was elaborately produced a part necessary for performing function of a type, for instance, a handle and Jugu(注口) in liquor ewer(注子) and an outlet in water dropper(硯滴). A material in the plant-shaped ceramics of China is similar to Goryeo. However, it was produced even Hap(盒:case) that briefly expressed a feature of a material. A reason of showing difference in a type in this way is judged to be because China focused more on function of type than formative beauty in a material. A material of the plant-shaped celadon in Goryeo is similar to China, but shows a feature peculiar to Goryeo in a type and a method of expressing formative aesthetics. A part that suitably combined the formative beauty and type function is thought to be more excellent in Goryeo than China. A character-shaped celadon was produced the materials such as young boy, young girl, and Shinseon(神仙) with water dropper(硯滴) and liquor ewer(注子) in type Ⅰ. The character-shaped celadon was produced all in a form of holding thing in hand by considering function of water dropper(硯滴) or liquor ewer(注子). A thing in the hand is an outlet in water dropper or Jugu(注口) in liquor ewer. Even an inlet was attached flower shape to decoration for formative beauty in a material or was produced in order to be invisible in a user. The whole flow in figurative celadon can be examined by being divided into three periods. The first period is the first half of the 12th century. The figurative celadon began to be produced on the basis of positive acceptance of Chinese civilization and of development in technology of producing celadon in the whole area of Gangjin. The second period is from the late 12th century to the first half of the 13th century. As this period was continued the aspect of figurative celadon in the previous period, the figurative celadon was actively produced focusing on kiln in the whole area of Gangjin and Buyeo. The figurative celadon in the second period shows a characteristic peculiar to Goryeo in expressing a material minutely and selecting a type even with accepting the influence of China. Also, the formative aesthetics in the figurative celadon was further highlighted by utilizing diverse decoration technique(施文技法)s such as intaglio & embossed carving, iron painting, and Cheolbaekhwa(鐵白畵) on Gimyeon(器面). In the Wonsando island of Boryeong that is the relic on the ocean floor especially in the first half of the 13th century, the largest quantity of figurative celadon has been found so far. Many fragments similar to figurative celadon of being delivered to museum until now exist. The final period is following the second half of the 13th century. Figurative celadon was produced focusing on kiln in Yucheon-ri of Buan. However, the tendency of being schematized and simplified in the detailed expression is shown. In this period, the figurative technique was greatly popular. Thus, it seems to have been primarily produced the celadon in a shape of melon and gourd dipper, which are easy for in-laying pattern among materials of figurative celadon. Since then, the figurative technique was utilized a little more universally. Hence, it was mainly produced the celadon with the focus on a pattern rather than a form. According to this flow, the figurative celadon seems to have been reduced gradually. The celadon in the shape of melon and gourd dipper available for in-laying pattern is thought to have been produced until the end of Goryeo. This study examined the whole aspect and the changing process in figurative celadon of the Goryeo Dynasty. The figurative celadon in Goryeo is the one that contained function and formative beauty by choosing influence of figurative ceramic in China. It is judged to have been actively produced the figurative celadon in the 13th century when even the sculptural aspect in Goryeo celadon can be seen, when diverse decoration technique(施文技法)s are utilized, and when brilliant celadon had been produced.
