The aim of this thesis is to study the growth of characters in my children's literature and represent the findings in a practical writing of a young-adult novel. I believe 'the moment when the belief in magic is shattered' is the starting point of growth, so I tried to find the scenes where characters encounter 'the moment of disenchantment' and show their resulting growth. In chapter Ⅱ, I presented the conceiving process and the purpose of writing of my children's short stories and demonstrated what kind of growth I wanted to tell through which characters. Characters sometimes gaze at and sometimes flee, although they overcome difficulties in the end. They meet with 'the moment of disenchantment' and grow up, realizing the ruthless truth (as Seok in "My Name Is Baek Seok"), becoming aware of the joys and sorrows of human existence (as Gyeong-su in “Finding My Grandtather”), or acquiring tolerance to coexist with strange others (as Hyeon-woo in "Me Too"). In chapter Ⅲ, I introduced the conceiving process and the purpose of writing of my children's novels and determined the way characters grow up. They go through all the unexpected challenges with their own way, as Bee-eup reads, writes and confides in Dear Mrs. Astrid Lindgren, as Young-wook mourns over her grandfather's death in The Last Event, or as Il-su and Il-seok dive in the middle of adolescence came late in The Birth of Il-su. The process of conception, the purpose of writing and writing methods of The Verge are laid out in chapter Ⅳ. I also examined how the way that unfold the growth of characters and the role of adult helpers in children's fiction was inherited and developed in young-adult novel. In children's fiction, characters are triggered to grow up by the encounter of the moment of disillusion, whereas Su-won of The Verge, a young-adult novel, is proved to be a person who has already made it through that moment. On the other hand, Su-won differentiates herself in that she feels sorry for her brother, Su-gil, who is yet experiencing growing pains, facing the moment of disillusion like other characters of children's fiction. I depicted Su-won as a beautiful and strong person who appreciates that growth is an arduous journey which ceaselessly betrays one's expectations, and who loves and pities people around her who are on the long journey together. Nevertheless, I didn't mean to impose a heavy burden on her under the cloak of independent growth, and thus send her a sound adult helper, her mother. The Verge is the first book I wrote as a young-adult novelist. 'The verge' is a setting of the novel as well as a symbol of adolescent character and reader who is on the verge. In this thesis, I illuminated that characters of children's literature grow up through encountering 'the moment of disenchantment,' while characters of young-adult novel grow up with sympathies and support for the people around them who are facing that moment. I leave the subject behind that I should inherit and develop those study results in the future writings by introducing a variety of original writing methods.
