Polyanionic compounds have been heavily investigated as possible electrode materials in lithium batteries. Most importantly fluorophosphate cathode materials attracted immense focus due to the high operating potential and long cycle life promoted by the constituents of the system. Many aspects of ion transport, type of reaction, solid solution behavior and their relation to particle size in the fluorophosphates are not clearly understood. The morphology, unit cell parameters, purity, formation of pure phase, and the electrochemical properties were greatly affected by synthetic condition. The most important aspects of fluorophosphates are the high operating voltage compared to the oxides and phosphates. This opens up to the second area of focus here, i.e., solid electrolyte. Solid state batteries are considered to be the alternative method of approach for overcoming the safety and energy density restriction imposed by the organic liquid electrolytes in the conventional batteries. Solid electrolytes capable of resisting more than 5 V also have attracted attention for the emerging electrode materials like fluorophosphates which has multiple lithium insertion capability. Particle density, phase formation, ion transport, durability, and the selectiveness of ions for lithium ion movement were not clearly understood. In this regard, the present thesis focuses on the improvement of energy density of the lithium cobalt fluorophosphate (Li2CoPO4F) cathode material. The second focus was dedicated to the development and characterization of sulfide based solid electrolytes that are easy to synthesis, at the same time have ionic conductivity equivalent to organic liquid electrolyte and also have electrochemical stability of at least 5 V vs. Li. Lithium cobalt fluorophosphate, Li2CoPO4F, is successfully synthesized by a solid state reaction under Ar flow at 700 ℃ by quenching. X-ray diffraction data revealed that the unit cell had orthorhombic structure with Pnma space group. The presence of fluorine is also supported by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The Li/Li2CoPO4F cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 127 mAh g-1 at a current density of 10 mA g-1 between 2.0 and 5.1 V at room temperature. Due to the higher operating potential of the Co2+/3+couple in the fluorophosphate matrix, this cell shows a capacity retention of only 53 % after 20 cycles, still the material delivered 108 mAh g-1at a high current rate of 1 C. Cyclic voltammetric studies corroborated the insertion and extraction of Li+ ions by a single phase reaction mechanism during cycling. A facile synthesis of a metal oxide (ZrO2 and Al2O3) coating on the surface of high voltage type Li2CoPO4F cathode material using the conventional solution based method is reported in this study. High voltage cathode material, Li2CoPO4F was successfully coated with various amounts of Al2O3 for enhancing the electrochemical performance. An initial discharge capacity of ~127 mAh g-1 was obtained between 2 and 5.1 V. The capacity retention, ratio of discharge capacity at 15th cycle to that at 1st cycle, at current rate of C/2 was increased from 53 % for pristine sample to 73 % for 1 wt% Al2O3 coated Li2CoPO4F. Cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge studies showed an increased operating voltage for Li2CoPO4F after Al2O3 coating. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy result suggested a reduction in charge transfer resistance in the asprepared samples. Moreover, the irreversible capacity loss, defined as the difference between charge capacity and discharge capacity, in the initial cycle was reduced, which suggested a reduction in electrolyte oxidation after coating process. A uniform amorphous layer of Al2O3 coating of ~3 nm thickness protected the surface of Li2CoPO4F during high voltage operation. Secondly, Li2CoPO4F is coated with various amounts of ZrO2. Among the samples, the 5 wt% ZrO2 coated Li2CoPO4F material shows the best performance with an initial discharge capacity of up to 144 mAh g-1 within the voltage range of 2 – 5.2 V vs. Li at 10 mA g-1. Moreover, this ZrO2 coated cell demonstrates an enhanced capacity retention which is two times higher than that of the pristine sample. The nano-sized coating over the Li2CoPO4F surface helps to attain a higher discharge capacity even at high current rates. As a consequence, the cell delivers a capacity of 104 mAh g-1 at a high current rate of 100 mA g-1. In the follow up study, it was found that the incomplete reduction of Co3+ to Co2+ during discharge under normal operating potential (2.0–5.15 V) is mainly responsible for the relatively small electrochemical capacity in a Li/Li2CoPO4F system. Ex-situ x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction results suggest that extending the lower cut-off potential to 1.2 V ensure a high reversible capacity of 230 mAh g-1 at a current rate of 20 mA g-1. Moreover, a stable cycle efficiency of 85 % with over 90 % coulombic efficiency is obtained for the Li/Li2CoPO4F cell under the optimal potential range of 1.2-5.15 V using an electrolyte containing high oxidation stable tetra methylene sulfone component. The moderate crystallite volume change (~ 4.8 %) after delithiation, along with the continuous sloping nature of the charge/discharge and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique plots confirms a quasi single phase reaction mechanism for the Li/Li2CoPO4F cell. The invariable charge transfer resistance, even after 50 cycles, is accountable for the improvement in the electrochemical property of Li2CoPO4F during high rate cycling. This is the first experimental confirmation of 5 V cathode material having a calculated energy density as high as 1150 Wh kg-1 using Li2CoPO4F (vs 585 Wh kg-1 for LiCoO2). Finally, lithium ionic conductors based on a Li2S-Al2S3-GeS-P2S5 system that can exhibit high ionic conductivity due to the constituents of this system were developed. Mechanical milling for a short duration and a single step heat treatment at a moderate temperature of 550 oC resulted in crystalline powders with high lithium ionic conductivity at room temperature that are comparable to the organic liquid electrolytes. The effect of various amounts of aluminum to germanium ratio was studied. Among the samples containing Al:Ge, the ratio of 30:70 was found to show high ionic conductivity of 1.7 x 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 oC and ~6 x 10-3 S cm-1 at 100 oC equivalent. The activation energy of this material was significantly less (Ea = 17 kJ mol-1), which can be considered to be the best value among solid electrolytes. The electrochemical stability was analyzed using cyclic voltammetry between -0.3 and 5.0 V and it was found that the voltammetric profile was smooth without any additional current response, due to electrolyte decomposition, or any other side reaction, except a pair of lithium deposition and a stripping peaks.
