Incremental forming is a method of extracting a contour toolpath regarding incremental forming from 3D CAD information of a design shape, fixing a material on the plate, and then progressively forming with CNC control. A number of studies are conducted because it has advantages in significantly decreasing time and cost for the design and production of closed mold which are critically required in the existing press process.
This study measured and analyzed how forming force changed in the directions of the X, Y, and Z axis by using tool dynamometer in order to examine the size of forming force required for incremental forming. Forming shapes used in the experiment were pyramids and hemispheres, and forming force differences between when forming sphere without corners and when forming rectangular geometry were compared and analyzed.
The experiment result showed that forming force was required greater in the direction of the Z axis compared to that of X and Y axis, and the initial entry required 1.5 times greater forming force of the Z-axis direction as peak value. Forming force was shown as sine wave in the direction of X and Y axis with consistent intervals. In the case of the pyramid shape, unlike the circular shape, consistent size of forming force as peak value was also observed in the corner because its side was rectangular. To examine the relationship between forming force and thickness of the material, the material was cut and its thickness was measured with electron microscopes.
