Next generation displays based on novel conceptions such as OLEDs and holographic 3D displays take the central interests based on up-to-date material and optical technologies. For those topics, computational electromagnetic modeling and analysis methodologies gets to be essential since vectorial properties of light in the interaction with material systems must be properly dealt with and understood. In most conventional display development, numerical finite difference methods such as Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method or Finite Element Method (FEM) have been employed. The disadvantage of those methods is that it is difficult to interpret the optical phenomena in terms of modal analysis. The modal analysis can be powerful for novel display research such as quantitative analysis of energy loss mechanism in OLED or design of complex modulation architecture for holographic 3D display. In this thesis, the theoretical framework of Fourier modal method (FMM), a representative electromagnetic modal analysis method, is in-depth studied and theoretically extended to the modeling of optical structure with internal dipole source. The extended FMM is used to model OLED structure and analyze the quantitative modal power spectrum of OLED structure. Internal loss and external radiation efficiency of the photonic structure with internal source is analyzed and the power flow as per mode is comprehended from the modal analysis. The FMM based design framework developed in this thesis can be further extensively applied to more general self-emitting display devices. On the other hand, complex modulation display pixel for holographic three-dimensional display has been designed and analyzed with the FMM. The double-phase hologram (DPH) macro-pixel has been modeled and its complex modulation efficiency is defined. The evaluation process of the complex modulation efficiency has been proposed. The method is applied to two comparative practical DPH structures with pixel pitch and pixel and analyzes respective complex modulation efficiencies. The issues associated the dimensional reduction from DPH macro-pixel to DPH macro-pixel is discussed. Conclusively, in the thesis, the theory and fundamental simulation codes of the FMM based design and analysis platform for next-generation displays has been established and its applications to OLED and holographic 3D display were presented.
